I have some PS-1 (pre-PS-2) MTH engines that I want to give to my grandkids. I am trying to make them as friendly as possible for them as they don't know about having to place the engine on the track with a voltage greater than 10V in order to have them run. Just put them on the track and run them.
I have a few questions about PS-1 as I am rather confused about the requirements of the various versions. First off, I know that not all PS-1 have batteries. Do xxxx-0 engines not have batteries and xxxx-1 engines have batteries? If I have a pre-PS-2 engine without batteries, should I always be able to simple place it on the track and run it? As for the engines with batteries, I know that I can replace the battery with a BCR. However, this requires that the grandkid follow the startup protocol of placing the engine on the track and applying greater than 10V for a minute. I'm not sure that many kids would remember to do this and therefore, possibly scramble the firmware in the engine. I read in a recently posted topic that a fellow said the a pre-PS-2 engine which normally had a battery could be run without a battery (or BCR I assume). It was stated that you would only lose the special sounds and features. Otherwise, the engine would run (forward and reverse) without problem. Is this true?
I would appreciate and info, words of wisdom, etc that would allow my grandkids to run these engines without their going off into the weeds.
Thanks !
