I just received my first brand new MTH product and it is a rail king, imperial Berkshire.

Is the whistle quillable on this train?

i haven't ran it yet and I don't have the full dcs controller, I just have their entry level remote and power pack. From what I understand is, I will only be able to control some of the sound features with it. But I wasn't sure if this train had that type of whistle. It came with proto sounds 3.

also the tender looks like it has a cutout for a switch to go between dcc/dcs but there is no switch and the directions do say there is a switch. I don't know if it doesn't need one because it's a newer updated system or they forgot to put it in?

Anyway, any help would be really appreciated!

thank you!

The Rail King Imperial steamers do not have a playable whistle. This feature is, at present, reserved for Premier steamers.

Also, only the very early Rail King PS3 engines had the DCS/DCC switch switch installed. MTH removed it from subsequent Rail King models because too many owners called service with issues because their engines wouldn't run under DCS when the issue was that the switch was in the wrong position.

I've long maintained that many so-called problems are due to not reading documentation. Happily, you appear to be  an exception!

This and a whole lot more is all in The DCS Companion 3rd Edition", available for purchase  from many fine OGR advertisers and forum sponsors, or as an eBook or a printed book.

I'm confused about the dcc/dsc thing. What is the jumper?

Aslo can anyone tell me in very basic explanation what dcc is and what dsc is? I bought a dcs remote controller to control this train and it was a cheap way to control it. The other thing I'm wondering is because it's the inexpensive remote, I won't have access to certain sounds. Can anyone tell me what sounds I won't have control of with the cheap dcs remote controller?

Thanks in advance!

It takes the place of the DCS/DCC switch.

They are both toy train command control systems.

All of the engine's sound clips can be played on command using the full DCS system. The only sounds playable from your "inexpensive (but not "cheap") remote, the DCS Remote Commander, are whistle/horn, bell, startup, shut down, chuff (for steamers), PFA, and coupler open. With the exception of PFA, these are played automatically according to operation.

Using the DCS system typically adds extended startup, extended shut down, doppler loop, and about a half dozen others that can be played on demand, as well as a host of additional features and functions.
