I am making a latex mold from a rock wall casting. I did a very light first coat of latex. The second coat I mistakenly put on a bit more latex than I should have. In some spots the latex is blotched together. Will the latex eventually dry in the heavier spots? I plan on adding numerous coats (6-8) until the mold is thick enough to remove. I fear the integrity of the mold may be destroyed by over latexing.

Any thoughts greatly appreciated!

You probably will be ok. I did the same thing on my first mold. Just keep the coats light and let dry overnight. After about 5 coats it would be a good idea to strengthen the mold by inserting some mesh in between the layers for strength. Drywall mesh or plastic screen is fine. It may take several coats to get it in the layers. Try and get it down the sides as this is where it will tear.

When you are satisfied with the number of coats you can put silicon caulking on top and smooth the back level. This will keep the mold stable on a flat surface when pouring the cast. I use plaster as it quick sets and will take color.

These pics are some that we have made. Good luck!
