This past Sunday I had the pleasure of riding on the Reading & Northern Iron Horse Ramble between Reading and Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania. If you’ve never visited the Reading & Northern, I highly recommend making the trip.

The 2102 easily handled the 18 car train. I decided to ride in one of the open air cars. The sights, sounds and smells of a large steam engine working up grade are hard to beat. I’ll be finding cinders in my hair for a while! Of course they offer other seating options for those who prefer more creature comforts.

August 13th was also Reading Blue Mountain & Northern Railroad’s (RBMN) CEO, Mr. Andy Muller Jr’s birthday. His private cars were added to the rear of the excursion consist. It’s rare to have a person in charge who loves steam railroading as much as your average railfan. I’d like to thank him for making all of this possible. And thanks to all the staff on board and behind the scenes for making the day a great experience.

If you’re interested in riding there is one more Ramble this year in addition to a number of fall foliage excursions. Select dates are powered by 2102.

Below are some photos I grabbed during the trip. The last two are of the Reading Pagoda at sunset after the excursion.

Thanks for sharing.  I recently rode the 70-minute round-trip excursion out of Jim Thorpe, and it was a great time - looks like your ride was much better.

If anyone is going to Jim Thorpe, I'd like to recommend the "trolley" ride that departs from in front of the station.  Nice entertaining ride around the town.  Only caveat is that I'm not sure how pleasant it will be in cold or bad weather.

I only want to be seated in open air cars behind steam.  The sights, sounds, smell and pulling coal ash out of your hair is what's it all about.  Thanks for sharing.

I understand the various constraints associated with the ability to have open air cars / doors. But I agree, open air is the best. There really is no comparison.

Susie and I rode the diesel trip (2 first class coaches + diner car) from Pittston, PA  to JT last Sunday. At JT we had all the grandkids meet us and took the 1pm caboose Gorge trip with the F's. Since F's were on head end outbound there was no runaround at the Gorge. Shoved all the way back to JT. GREAT TRIPS.

From the time our first train arrived, counted 16 passenger movements at JT station. Possibly was the busiest little train station in America that day.

Thanks to Andy Muller.

When my wife and I road the double header a couple of years ago we wound up at a bar/restaurant all they way up the hill. Line wasn't too bad compared to closer to the station, bench across the street for me while she stood on line. Most of the places don't take reservations at lunch time.

I believe we went to the same place. It’s called Marion Hose Bar. The name comes from the fact the building used to be a fire house.
