A railfan buddy and I are going to Calif. next week to ride Amtrak up the coast. We will have a day to look around in San Diego. We plan on going to the train layout in Balboa Park. What other railroad/model train/ hobby shop-type places could we spend some time at? We will be limited to places we can get to using public transportation.

Thanks,

Jeff

you can take the trolley,  from, santa fe depot, all the way  to santee,, 2 ways to go, south , or up mission valley which would take less time,, south route you ride on the SDIV,  tracks, it stops in la mesa,  2 block walk to Reeds hobby shop,

frank the trainman is on park blvd,.  you would have to take bus, ... also,, trolley to border,,mexico,  ends at border........if I had my 56 Packard on the road I would drive you around,

Stop by a neat layout in Old Town.  Good sized 3 rail pike open to the public.  It occupies two store units along the main drag.

If you can get some wheels there is a full sized RR museum of sorts in Campo due East on the 8.

Plan on spending at least half a day to go thru the Balboa Park RR museum.  Several very large RRs run by very hospitable folks who will take you behind the scenes.  You won't believe the stand up/walk around work room and storage yards hidden under the mountains.

Don't miss the two story Tehachapi loop and approaching main line on the upper deck.  There is some real serious layout building going on here!
