Hi,

Can a remote control be used on older, three rail, Lionel O Gauge Track to operate trains,(MTH/Lionel) that have the Proto 2.0 and 3.0 sound effects? If so, what would be needed to do so? I currently run a Lionel KW Transformer that powers a simple two oval set up under the Christmas Tree train platform.

These modern reproduction trains, with the sound effects, seem to be awesome. Are they going to negatively effect the pre-war tin plate trains of the past, value and collector wise?

 Thanks,

 John

Rice Burner,

Yes you can run your older conventional trains with both the DCS and TMCC/Legacy, reference the DCS section of the OGR, not DCC.

My 1st suggestion for you is to purchase Barry's book The DCS O Gauge Companion and also the OGR Video Guide to DCS, the education you need for setting up a complete remote control layout is contained in these formats, they will save you a lot of time and aggravation.

You can use your Lionel KW transformer with either 10 Amp breakers or quick blow fuses when running DCS & Legacy combined, its explained in both the Video & Barry's book.

Rice Burner,

You can use DCC to run 3 Rail O Gauge. You will loose the ability to run conventional using the Lionel Transformer.

You can easily convert engines with a can motor.  The older open frame motors will need to be modified using diodes.  Digitrax's website has information on doing this.

I have converted one open frame motor and it works.
