Working [X]

During my 1st twenty years of my career I would have told you I am retiring as soon as I'm eligible.  I could never understand why anyone would work a day longer than they had to.

As I start the down side (5 years later) I'm now rethinking and can understand why people continue to work and hang around.  40 hours a week can be a hard void to fill if you don't have a plan on how to fill them.

Ron

Self employed carpenter for 44 years. Forced into retirement due to shoulder injury( had surgeries 8 years ago and all was fine until last injury- torn rotator cuff, can't be fixed again- I'm too old (67).  So I decided to bring out my old trains plus some new ones, and begin a new hobby. Working on the layout now and enjoying every minute of it. Will post some progress photos soon.

[X]  Retired from paid employment in 1992 due to health factors.

[X ] Unpaid volunteer work requiring some travel. Built two layouts, ['92 Mtn.Cottage & '97  Greensboro Condo]. Physically grounded temporarily 2002 when disabling health issues emerged.

[X ] Back on my feet and retired from retirement. Dismantled Mtn. Cottage layout

Mar.'08 and Condo Oct.'09. Feb.'10 built small 9x16 round-the-room layout in a finished Condo attic space from recycled layout components. Wired, trains running.

[0]  March '10 began treatment for "small stroke" and a repair of two back fractures.

Now looking forward post rehab to running trains on lame layout, with lame brain     and 83 year old lame bones.

But still vertical and enjoying teenage prostate.

Worked 33 years in law enforcement...it was a career I loved...and just retired this last June.  I loved my job...but I love every minute of my retirement.  I have more time to be a housewife, home project manager, model railroad construction engineer, photographer, a wine connoisseur and a grandfather to 3 girls!  Although I still teach part time at our community college.  Other than that...every day's a Saturday!

For those thinking you retire to beyond is only if you pull up a chair and never leave it!

In mulling over the work years verses retirement my thoughts.
  do I miss working No!

do I  miss fellow co- workers Yes

we  enjoy walking into any store and not be hurried to get items needed.

we can walk all we care to and not be mindful of what time it is.

we can run trains anytime we so choose be it 1am or? As I can nap anytime I care to.

we can piddle around in yard all day if we so chose and enjoy mother nature's  changes.

"We" meaning wife of 41 years now. is my best friend and so much more!

we are so much more busy now that minutes turn into hours in a blink as most will say where did we find time to work a 40 hr workweek as well!

hard to fill a 40 work week  hour void not so much as homes still require maintenance and repairs.

friends to visit with and travels unhindered by the only have 2 weeks vacation time frame!

do we miss working? no way we're enjoying our retirement too much !
plus you wake up on monday and poof it's Sunday already literally.

to all whom are retired enjoy it. for those getting close embrace it.
for those that are 25 years away it will go quicker than you think.

The real trick is remembering what day it is as time and what day it is isn't really relavent in a way because we no longer have a set timetable work wise!

Almost 5 years in the USMC as a pilot after "uncle' invited me to attend the "Police Action" in SE Asia; then retired in 2013 after 39+ years with Allison Gas Turbine/Rolls-Royce Aerospace PLC. Still had the same employee ID # after all that time which makes me one of the "fossils" these days.

Busy building an around the room 11' X 14' layout in retirement + all the honey-do's...

I am a 47 year old retired electrician. I am retired due to the loss of my right leg to diabetes, Kidney Transplant & 2 Heart surgeries.

I would go back to work tomorrow. I loved my job installing Fire Alarms.

the bad part is I would have to look for all my tools scattered every wear I work along my layout.

On the Railroad 42 years +, most of you guys would love to have my job. I love what I do. The level of my day to experiences can only be imagined by anyone outside of the circle railroad professionals in New York.

So, ... not retired. Still playing with trains; ... and when I get home, I play with the ones I really like!!
