I have a very nice running Lionel 624 C&O NW2 Switcher that has copper wire couplers that can only be used with the 5 rail track for uncoupling. But the shoes won't roll smoothly over Ross switches so using the switcher in an active yard is nearly impossible. However, I have heard that these couplers can be rewired to allow the coupler to open by just pushing the horn button on your transformer. Is this true and if so, how exactly is it done. Thanks. I believe you would need a horn relay to start off

Joe the best thing to do with the sliding shoe is to remove it and use the loco with the coil couplers in the closed position.

Just let the car do the uncoupling.
