So this christmas i wanted to run my lionel s3 261. Put it on the track and got the dreaded cab flashes that something is wrong with the smoke element. Then I decided to finally run my vision line big boy 4014 that I bought a few months ago. Well guess what, cab flash again. Looks like I got one of the bad ones. Prob the motor wire disconnected so I may fix it myself.

Now I found a lionmaster big boy which I bought which runs good but it has weak smoke output, so I'm trying to figure that out.

Love this hobby but it seems I'm just unlucky with the issues I had so far. I have a incoming legacy hiawatha which I hope has no issues but who knows

Sorry but i guess im just venting

Just as a Hail Mary type fix, first try changing your track power source and wiring to the track (or better yet, use a dedicated test track) to ensure the absolute lowest resistance path.

Then reset your "blinking" engines as follows:

i. With power on track, press the “R” with the octagon around it. The engine should respond with a short whistle.
ii. Turn off power to track
iii. Turn off the command base power…to stop TMCC/Legacy radio frequency from reaching the track
iv. Wait about 30 seconds.
v. Restore command base power
vi. Restore track power.
vii. Turn speed wheel to move forward

Nothing to lose by trying this before you perform surgery!
