Are there any instructions or videos on how to service this diesel?  The manual suggests to take it to an authorized service center but there are none available.  I don't know if the power train needs lubrication or the traction tires I tried to change are the problem, but it runs wobbly and noisy. Any help appreciated. I have in the past serviced post war diesels but am not sure if this is one that should not be touched by the uninitiated.

The worm gear in the truck should be greased annually if you run it often, the idler gears every few run sessions and every axle and pick up roller get a dab of oil to keep them lubed is all you need. Did you make sure the traction tires are in the grooves?  It should run smoothly if mounted properly. Dental picks work well on all brands of traction tires for me.

Thank you.  This is what I did and found out.

First: I cut off all the 4 traction tires - 3 of which I had just put on.    When put on the track the engine sounded okay (much better than in the video)  but one or more wheels spun. Motor seemed okay - but see below.
Second: I put on 4 new tires and for a brief time the engine ran fine (or so I thought).  Then one of the new traction tires got loose.
Third: I turned the engine over in a cradle and ran it from my old transformer.  On the Santa Fe Conventional Classic only the front truck worked.
The back did not turn at all.
Fourth:  I also have  a NYC F3 Conventional Classic: on that both front and back power trucks worked when in a cradle and powered from the old transformer.
Fifth:  When the tires go bad they leave so much crud on the wheel it is difficult to get it clean. I am trying a Dremel as someone did online. I think this
contributes to the problem when a new one is put on -- not smooth.
I have taken apart and serviced a post war F3 (successfully) using Jim Weatherford's  DVD and PDF instructions.  However I am not sure these
still apply to the Conventional Classics.  Do you know if these are vertical or horizontal motors.    Can a novice do it? Are there instructions anywhere - besides the useless
Lionel manual.  There are no authorized Lionel service centers in my area.
