Can Anyone Identify what kind of Diesel this is and/or what that protruding box is behind the cab?

Its probably an air cleaner assembly equipped for dealing with sandstorms.
EMD SDL50; air filtration [ as mentioned above ]
I can't make out the cab #, but it looks like an EMD SDL50. The big box behind the cab is an extra large intake air filter. They are special order custom built by EMD for the SROG.
Interesting info on their construction. The L is for a lightened version(less axle load)

In the 1950's, they bought EMD cab units with sand filters covered with Farr grilles. If I remember correctly, the units were FP7's, but maybe they were FP9's, F7's or F9's.
