That's a toughie. I also think 1/4" plywood, framed with 1x2s underneath it, would be sturdier and lighter than any other option.

Are you handy with a saw and wood glue?

Thanks Bill, I was contemplating the same thing. Luan would be too flimsy but the 1/4” might work. Thanks for your input.

I bought thicker plywood for my table a few weeks ago and used 1x3's to frame the underside. I glued them on and then used screws...man...talk about stiff. It made more of a difference than I expected. How big of an area are you doing?

I’m contemplating a modified 4’x8’ area. I want to use the foam board on top of the 1/4” plywood. Also I want to round the edges to help take away from the right angles.

Sounds promising. 4'x8' can be a pain to move. The two sections would be a good idea.

I might do a smaller section behind it to help with the depth perception and to detract from the corner.

Not sure but I’ve been experimenting with 3/4” and it is unwieldy on its own. It would be cumbersome with structures adding weight. Thank you for your interest.
