I share this in hopes of saving someone the same aggravation. I received my MTH Premiere 4-8-4 Northern yesterday. I immediately carried the heavy box up to my train room. I carefully placed the tender (man this thing is heavy) on the track, then the locomotive. I plugged in the wireless drawbar, added the locomotive to my ipad roster. Pulling a string of UP passenger cars the beautiful 844 began its life on my layout. Rolling at 25 scale MPH, the train reached the second turn when it stopped and shut down!!! I moved the train a few inches and it powered right back up, but it did it again in the same location. Stupid me figured it was a loss of power, so I quickly soldered in a wire in that location and connected to my bus wire. started the train up again...IT STOPPED AGAIN!!! I was a little hot at this point. So, in desperation I simply cleaned the track...PROBLEM SOLVED! My 844 runs smooth as silk. Had I just done the simple task of cleaning the track I could have prevented my blood pressure from going up. Next time I'll start with the simple stuff...lol!

This sounds like something I'm definitely going to run into when I'm actually able to run anything (I get frustrated very easily with stuff like this. Well, at least at first since I'm still in the wiring phase.
I'm glad it was only dirty track!
Clint,
Dirty Track has caused more than a few peoples blood pressure to Sky Rocket, get your self a tack cleaning car and run her about twice a week, really helps keep the blood pressure down!

By pain I learned that I cannot just power-up the trains and run them. The layout always needs some attention, be it dirty track, a balky switch, a faulty 3rd rail connection, a circuit breaker that pops, dead light bulbs, etc.
OK, Simple question: Using DCS with PS 3 engines (diesels & steam). Just messing' around today. Checked "Track Signal" on handheld with engine happily motoring around at ~15 smph. Single was 9-10 all the way. Increased speed to ~45 smph and repeated test. Signal dropped to 4-5 (sometimes less) at increased speed. I'd never noticed this before.....Don't remember ever checking signal strength at speed before, though. Always checked signal at 10--15 smph.
Is this normal ? Would signal strength diminish with increased speed ? Everything responds normally at speed.
Jeff,
Is this normal ? Would signal strength diminish with increased speed ?
That's normal. The faster you go, the more variables you juggle. More speed means rougher contact, and more bouncing for pickup rollers and wheels with the rails.
The slower you go, the more accurate the reading. The best reading will be obtained when standing still. I typically recommend that DCS signal tests be conducted at "the slowest speed that you can stand".
This and a whole lot more is all in “The DCS Companion 3rd Edition!" This book is available from many fine OGR advertisers and forum sponsors, or as an eBook or a printed book at MTH's web store! |
Thanks, Barry,
Yes, I bought your book last year and yes, it is a wealth of information ! I've enjoyed my MTH-PS3 even more when problems can be sorted out and your book is an immense help. The problem my book is not where my layout is ( I shall remedy this tomorrow). And the real problem is remembering to look it up when I get home.
But, thanks again for your attention to us old-folks !!!
Clean track is very important to good operation. I have a railroad that runs every day and I constantly keep my track spotless.
