Smoke Unit Fan driven PN 610-8375-200 Run stand alone?

Try jumpering the two outside pins together, that's usually the missing link on some of these smoke units.  If that doesn't do it, you probably have a fan power supply issue.  Top suspect is the LM78L05 regulator, next is the capacitor.  The diode rarely fails, but it might, it's a common 1N4003 diode.

Of course, you might have a bad fan motor as well, unplug it and try it with a DC power supply, no more than 5VDC maximum.

when I jump the 2 outer pins, where do I apply the 5V?  Across the 8 Ohm pins I suppose?

Its a brand new unit so it would be rare to have a failure already.

Since I using a 1033 AC transformer, do I need to boost the voltage?

You jump the outside pins and then just apply normal power to one outside pin and the center pin.  There is a fly in the ointment for your use however.  If you plan on keeping the 8 ohm resistor, you won't have enough voltage on the fan power supply at 5V in to properly run the fan.

I'd change the resistor to a higher value for your building use.  If you replace it with a standard Lionel 27 ohm resistor, you can run it on 12-14 volt accessory AC power after jumpering those two pins.

Actually, the fan should run at around 7V on the power input, but you will have to jumper those two pins to get it running.  If it doesn't run at 7V on the power input, it broken.

Had it at 8.5 v and it smoked away with fan blowing

The smoke unit won't last long with 8.5 volts on the 8 ohm resistor, you really don't want more than about 6 watts of power being dissipated in the smoke unit.

If we calculate the power, 8.5 * 1.06 = 9.03 watts.  That will smoke great for a little while, but if you don't keep pouring smoke fluid in, it'll cook the wick and then the resistor.

I was just testing. I will change to a 20 ohm resistor. Good thing it’s put together with screws for easy servicing.
