If you decide to load windows 10 you better have a wireless compatible or an ethernet if you want to post or go online to visit ogrforum.
I have 32 bit system only and so far no wireless driver available for Dlink DWA131 and windows says not compatible.
just an FYI if 64 bit things are better my brother is 64 bit and all his virus and wireless had drivers installed working like he never left windows 8.1

As for Windoze 8 - it never worked OK.

Rich, what about new laptops that are preloaded with windows 10? Will they work with this forum?

If you are eligible for a free copy of Windows 10, and want to upgrade to it, then run the compatibility checker that Microsoft has provided.
My Windows 8 laptop is supposed to be 100 percent compatible.

I don't really like windows 8, but it does work fine.
Internet Explorer is another story, what a piece of junk.
I probably will upgrade to Windows 10, I haven't made up my mind yet.

If I had my druthers, I'd stay with Windows XP, it does everything I want, and I am very familar with its internals and supporting it. But Microsoft was decomitted support.

FYI - Microsoft has done away with Internet Explorer. The new default web browser for Windows 10 is Microsoft Edge.

I bought a Windoze 8.1 laptop a few months ago and it has upgraded to Windoze 10. Hated 8.1; feel a little better about Windoze 10 as we got our Start Menu back. Minor issue with the having to manually turn off the touch pad when my USB wireless mouse engages. The browser, "Edge" behaves about the same as Internet Exploder 11 but lacks some of the adjustment options. Fortunately, Firefox works great. My Windoze 7 laptop I use for flashing engines, etc. still works and I'm probably going to leave it as-is even though it's eligible to upgrade.

since loading windows 10 I discovered it isn't the adapter that is not compatible but rather the program on the disc used to load dlink icon and drivers.

so you have to go to the manufacturers website and download drivers to computer and then manually install them.

Rich I always try new things out some good some a disaster I like windows 10 for most part it is a learning curve as to what feature in settings now houses what we were used to finding on windows xp-7-8.

the settings page is really the new form of control panel.

I liked windows 7 just disliked the blue circle always working never could resolve that issue.

I have not tried downloading the LCS from Lionel yet if that works in win 10 will be a good thing.

Since we're talking about new computers .... what do you guys do about the hard drive in a computer you're disposing of?

Do you guys download software to "wipe" the hard drive clean? I saw "CClean" on the internet? Is that stuff legit?

Or, should I remove the hard drive and physically destroy it .... sledge hammer, arc welder, etc ...

Thanks

Windoze 8/8.1 - gaaaah! I loaded ClassicShell just to get along and make it look "normal".

Just upgraded to 10 and using Google Chrome with no problems on this forum.

Still have XP on my older laptop (7-8 years) which I "downgraded" from Vista when I bought it. Still going but I use the Aviator web browser which apparently gives a secure way to net-surf with Microsoft not supporting XP anymore, the bums.....

As you were: computer rant over......

I just downloaded and installed windows 10 on a laptop. So far, "Edge" runs perfectly. At least for now, I'm using it instead of Firefox.

At least on my machine, IE on Windows 8 was much worse than "quirky."

I take it out, stick it in an external USB enclosure, and keep it

Never know when there might be some obscure file left on the old drive that you might need, an external USB case doesn't take up much room, and you never have to be concerned whether you erased it securely enough or not.
