Purty!
Not only is she purty, she is personally important. An ex-girlfriend, whilst chaperoning 8th graders on a tour of Washington DC, sent me postcard of 1401. W are closing in on 49 years of marriage.

Very nice.
Sadly a view like that isn't possible now...a "station" hides much of the tender as well as walkways and platforms around the engine, allowing at some spots to get right up to it. A sound system is also hooked up to it.
It is obvious the engine is in pristine cosmetic condition. Those chromed(?) rods really look sharp. I wonder what its mechanical condition is, as well as the other steam locomotive in the collection, the narrow gauge 4-4-0 a few steps away. The John Bull is not in the same general area but on the same floor near the escalators.
Tis a fine look'in locomotive !
I was there on February 17. Everything is done with darkened subdued lighting making it difficult to do photography in heavy crowds. Also attached is a photo of the narrow guage 4-4-0-. Ironically the John Bull is the easiest loco to photograph.
