I recently came across an older Bowser O gauge, 3-rail PTC trolley with number 5205 on it's side and lighted headlight at both ends. While the front and rear end windows and sidesdoors have no window inserts whatsoever it does have shillouetted side passenger windows. Trolley is all metal/steel construction with non-sprung brass trolley poles and made only to run in one direction with no reversing mechanism. It has no dates on either box or included parts diagram to indicate the year it was made but it's was obviously manufactured quite a few years ago.

When tested out on Fastrack, it runs very smoothly and quietly at all speeds but at times sparks at pick-up rollers.

My question is since the track is clean and nothing else sparks when run on it, is it because the trolley's pickup rollers are obviously sol worn that the sparking happens? Also, since replacement pick-up rollers are likely no longer available from Bowser can anything be done to the existing worn rollers to eliminate or at best minimize the sparking?

Thanks,

Kenn, I have this same trolley.  I believe they were made in the mid to late 1990s, that's when I got mine.

For the sparking, only thing I can think of, which I'm sure you've tried already, is to clean the pick up rollers as best you can.  Maybe lightly sand them smooth and clean with mineral spirits if they are not too far gone.  But I imagine the pick up rollers can be replaced with any O gauge rollers.  I haven't looked at mine for a while.

Brian, please check your email. Thanks.

NO. Its the crappy design of the Pick-up rollers. I have not seen a Bowser trolley with OEM pick-up rollers that DON't spark. Like the early Williams, the single pivot roller pick-ups tend to spark as their spring tension fluxuates while the unit is operating. Your best bet if you really like the trolley is to convert the roller pick-ups with the arm type or the MTH dual mini type roller pick-ups for their B-B lighting kits. you will have to conger up a way to fasten them to the car/truck of the trolley.
