MTH has been my favorite train manufacturer and for me it was a real letdown when I heard they were closing down.  Now we see new items coming along that are under the MTH name but are basically just remakes of earlier products in new roadnames, schemes, etc.  Sad to see they sold off some of their tooling to others like Atlas because those items now cost more than they did when MTH made them.  My real question is what is going on at MTH?  Will they ever make any new models that they have not made before?  Mike was the one company that would produce models of some less common prototypes, like PRR early Electrics and Centipedes.  Everyone has made the common F3s and GG1s for example.  There are still models out there that have not been made before.  Does anyone really know what is going on?

The short version...  Mike Wolf wanted to sell the company and retire.  Found out that nobody was willing to pay what he wanted.  Sold some tooling to Atlas and some to Lionel.  Mike Reagan is now running the parts operation, and there is another group working on DCS.  BTO and custom runs are still being done.  Warranty is basically to return it for replacement (if still available) or refund.

MTH is still alive and making trains. Not as many as before, but still bring out new stuff weekly. Sign up for their news letter and you will get a scoop of what's new available. True they did sell some tooling to L and A, Some of their S scale tooling also. What became of the HO tooling I don't know.  The European tooling both O and HO was sold to one of the European manufacture's but I forgot which ones.  Best they did sell some of the tooling off, because they wouldn't have the capacity to bring all of it back, and at least some of the old engines will be available again.

In my opinion, the true measure of MTH's success and contribution to the hobby is the amount of its tooling that's been acquired by other manufacturers. MTH made models of locomotives that others did not. I would have preferred to see MTH retain its tooling but it's still making high quality steam and diesel locomotive models and Railking has been been upgraded to Railking Imperial. It's not clear that new tooling will appear from any of the manufacturers but I'm still willing to buy models of what MTH is making now. The MTH Premier Heavy Pacific models that were announced a few months ago are a case in point. I'm looking forward to the New York Central version.

Much to our chagrin, it's hard to argue with any of the train company's owners' decisions to scale back, be it Williams/WBB, K-Line, Weaver, 3rd Rail, or MTH. MTH and the others made some great products.

Same goes for the retail side that has seen more store closings than new openings. I really hand it to Menard's moving ahead with the wind in their face.

Tough industry. New products are capital intensive and the seemingly infinite road names makes production inefficient. Also, I can't think of another industry with more competition from the used market.
