I’ve been trying to get these to run together, but no-go. I haven’t updated my Legacy stuff yet, so I’m stuck with TMCC. I’ve tried everything in the manual to make a “train” out of these, and nothing works. The rear unit is not controlled like it should be. Is there something I’m missing, or just send them back?

Update your Legacy stuff and try again.
First, we need a Lionel Product No(s). You'll find them on the end(s) of the box(es).
Can't do much without that.

It’ll take me a long time to update anything. Should work in TMCC, right? All kinds of stuff to buy and download. Number is
2133010
Does the rear unit function ok by itself (without the front unit on the track at the same time)?

OK— I’ve been real sick, but better now, so asked a friend to help out. I went slowly and got it all running. Still wondering why no features work in TR mode—talking, volume, rev up and down. Is that normal? And, it came missing a window—don’t want to know how long that will take!
RIRocket,
You can run both engines using the same engine number for each A unit. One A (the one with the sound) will always start in forward and the other. A unit will always start in reverse. No need to set them up as a train. The rear A units front coupler will open when you press the rear coupler switch and the headlight will come on when you go into reverse.

Glad I found this thread. Sold my brand new in original shipper Pennsy E7 and SuperBass from that same catalog. Would anyone care to shed some light on why my buyer would be having this issue of a non-lead A unit not being able to be programmed into legacy? I had inquired to him whether the lights still light up when power is added and how there wouldn't get sound out of the helper A unit for what it’s worth since it doesn’t have speakers.
