The R142A would win. According to the MTA's CED (Car Equipment Department) the R142 puts out a total of 2,065 hp with a Alstom ONIX propulsion system per 5 car set, while the R142A puts out a total of 2,100 hp with 3-Phase AC Traction Motors per 5 car set. The 3-Phase AC Traction Motors are also used in the R143 and R160. Also after the the purchase and test run of the R142 from Bombardier it was deemed a "step down" from what they wanted, which is the reason why the R142 were the only Bombardier NTT (New Technology Trains) subway cars produced for the MTA's subway division.
