I'm planning on having a Super-Chuffer demo in the Henning's Trains booth at York. I was getting a K-Line Allegheny ready and rebuilding the smoke unit and installing the Super-Chuffer. As I ran it on the bench, I realized that the smoke unit almost worked too good, the prodigious volume of smoke was overwhelming!
I got to thinking that it would be nice to be able to switch the smoke on a lower setting for some environments, yet still keep the impressive smoke operation available as well. Turns out there's a remarkably easy way to do that. I just wired four 1A diodes in series with the output of the TMCC smoke connection on the ERR Cruise Commander and connected the other side of the diode string to the OFF side of the locomotive's smoke switch. One way is max smoke, the other way is low smoke.
This is an easy way to have different levels of smoke output. If you really want to go crazy, you could even have a 3rd level with more diodes.
I'm sure some will think "Why not control it from the remote". Well, that's a very cool idea, and I'm thinking about it!
Since I run strictly command, not having a physical smoke-off switch didn't bother me, I can turn it off from the remote. If you want a smoke-off switch, you could still wire one in series with the smoke lead.
