And...they just happen to be in my favorite livery!  Reportedly these were originally built for, and rejected by, the New York Central. SP 3025 was intended to be NYC 4607 but was instead shipped to the SP in December 1953 as the 4805, Class DF-501. It was F–M construction number 24-L-794. In the 1965 renumbering it became SP 3025, Class FP624-2. In Dec. 1975 it assigned to become braking sled SPMW 9102, stripped but left incomplete. In Sep. 1978 it was scrapped in Sacramento.  PHOTO TAKEN BY AND COURTESY OF STEVE SLOAN.

Thank you for posting this photo., Matt.

These Train Masters were the locomotives of the future, as so many other types and brands, were to be.

The first I saw was back in 1954, Lionel's grey and maroon, with the maroon top for the (D.L.&W. RR.), Lackawanna RR.

The Lackawanna Train Master's shape, massive size and color scheme was impressive, but to no avail, as we didn't have money for unnecessary and costly items.

I'm not sure, but it may have cost an expensive $24.00, back in 1954, in Manhattan, New York City, N.Y.

As I recall, all US built Trainmasters were scrapped and one Canadian built survives. I'm sure if this is not correct you all will set the record straight.

I spent my (short) military career serving on the Submarine Bonefish, the last diesel built; it had 3 Fairbanks Morse 10 cylinder engines

All we have left here is a couple of cut down slugs !  What a tragedy !   We COULD have had N&W  (ex VGN) #173..and she was supposed to be saved, but the old N&W curse stabbed us when our back was turned. I mean she was right there at Shaeffer's, no less!   FWIW, I'm still hoping to find a photo of one of the Espee Monsters in NYCS paint.  Supposedly, two were in black and gray paint before the order got scrubbed.  Love to see one of those NS slugs restored, even if it's just a dummy unit !

Unless someone at FM shot that photo, it probably doesn't exist.  There may be a profile drawing lying around somewhere.

I remember seeing FM profile drawings for Train Masters in New Haven green & gold and Illinois Central in traditional black garb.  Trouble is, I don't remember where.  I've scoured the Trains and Model Railroader archive CD's to no avail, my best guess is maybe in Extra 2200 South many moons ago.
