You can repack them yourself if you know your way around basic hand tools.

Thanks,

Yes I dismounted and made the request in Lionel, but I would like to know the name or code of the material that keeps the resistor. You know information?

I'll second the lack of fluid, especially these f units. Its a long way for the fluid to go to get through the outlet funnel and into the unit itself. The new legacy units are especially thirsty and 15-20 drops in my experience only lasts mayber 10-15 minutes and thats on the low setting.

Prime the unit with fluid before you put the top of the smoke unit back on, then add regularly. With f units I add fluid, put one finger over one exhaust stack and then gently blow down the other, then let it sit overnight.

Adding fluid at the end of an operating session instead of before helps allow the fluid to find its way down into the wicking.

Where I find to buy?

Thanks,

Well, in the US it's easy, any big-box hardware store like Home Depot or Lowes.  I'm not sure in Brazil.   I'd assume the same kind of store you'd buy the tiki torches in.

You can tell me the name Lionel uses for this part?

Hello all!

Last night I was sad because my unit smoke BigBoy also stopped working, at first I thought it was just the lack of fluid or resistor burned, but it was not!

I disassembled the entire unit, did the tests with the two resistors and they work with engines and auxiliary power, so the problem is in voltage or sending commands Legacy.

In the terminal has 4 pins, anyone can say what voltage should I find there?

Any tips of what to do because I have to do the maintenance myself, because sending to the USA has a very high cost.

Thank you,

Leandro,

Sorry to hear about your smoke issue with the 4011.

I have the same loco and had to send it in for repair about a month ago when the smoke unit stopped working.

I'm traveling this week on business so I don't have access to the repair slip, but I can check it when I get home on Saturday to let you know what the issue was.

Obviously, your problem may not be the same but it's worth looking at.

If I recall, I thought I recall it saying that "a screw connection needed to be tightened"? Not sure if they were referring to one of those holding the resistor?

Nonetheless, it wasn't an issue with anything burning out or needing replacement. Hopefully, your issue is just as easy to remedy.

Mike, I think my problem is the same that you had

Last night was two hours trying to understand the problem and taking measurements and I think I'm close to the resolution.

1) I tested the bridge rectifier and voltage regulator and both are perfect, because I have the DC and 5V;
2) In measuring the connectors directly on the unit smoke could not mediate anything, I have no tension in resistors;
3) So I decided to measure again, but now using the negative rectifier bridge and there was my surprise, it could have 5V and 17V and other voltages in resitor not remember now;
4) I took a wire and made a bridge from the negative (-) terminals of the bridge rectifier direct negative of one engine and it worked, so I put in another and also worked and now the resistor and it worked well!

My question is, is missing the negative, but I could not see any broken wire and could not understand the reason for the failure!

Any tips?

It could be the regulator for the smoke unit if its not heating up when connected to the loco.

 Faulty AC regulators is a somewhat common problem.

I had a challenger that had intermittent smoke, some times it worked sometimes not at all.

One day it smoked like crazy overheated and burned up the resistor, changed out the regulator as recommended by Lionels tech support and problem solved.

You can ask Lionel tech their opinion of what the problem might be, just fill out the form on the "service/repair question" link. http://www.lionel.com/ContactUs/

Heres a link to parts for your loco in case it helps.

Hi, Mike!

Then I measured the regulator and bridge rectifier and I have tension in both heats and the regulator, but the negative is not enough smoke in the unit.

I have already sent an email to Lionel and I'm waiting for the second answer, because I think it's the controller card, but wish I could somehow confirm before buying.

Thank you for your feedback and I will wait for the response from Lionel.
