Thanks for posting. I like the backlit exhaust plume and the flickering oil flames in the firebox.
Great video. One of the things that set apart steam is that white flickering firebox and you would think after all the electronic gizmos they put on models, a flickering firebox would be one of them.
Thanx...Thanx....THANX...* get the point...lol....
Made my day watching and hearing it...wow...
Thanks for the post. Takes me back to my youth and whistles in the night on the NKP and Big Four. What a great lullaby those chimes did sing.
I love to run my trains in the dark. Now I have to come up with a way to backlight the smoke! In the dark, an LTI Rock Island 5100 looks almost like a UP Northern
Your welcome guys...I love the video for just those reasons....the lighting makes it.
That was an awesome, but chilly, evening in Cheyenne. Just prior to 844's headlight showing west of town, I was asked to vacate my spot I had scouted earlier by a UP official who identified himself as out of the trainmaster office. His vehicle is the dark green cherokee in your video. I moved to the sale barn with time to spare. First time to chase in the dark, and it was great. Thanks for your video!
Super video! Day or night, 844 is a magnificant smooth running engine. I'll bet the entire crew was glad to be back in Cheyenne after that excursion.
If I had known I could have caught it in the dark, I would have driven out there myself. I did catch it once at night already, rolling 60 mph through Warrensburg, MO. I hit it with over 8,000 watt seconds of flash power, and it swallowed it right up!

There is nothing like steam at night! This was in September 2010 on the CVSR. Our webmaster was at the throttle and I was firing this run by. A night I will never forget!
Nice video...steam definetly takes on a new look when the sun goes down. My personal favorite time is a cool and damp day....just the best for steam.
