In the past 18 months, I have gone from using a windows desktop to a MAC computer. I know I can not use this to upgrade MTH software for my TIU's and Remote. But I did keep a Dell laptop that operates using Windows Vista for this kind of situation. I realize now that this laptop's RS 232 port is 15 pin instead of 9 pin. Since all my TIU' are Rev L versions, does the USB port they now have substitute for the RS 232? Am I likely to run into any other issues using Windows Vista, such as license permissions or drivers that may make this more complicated than simply using a cable other than the RS 232 I used for previous software changes? Phil

The fifteen pin female receptacle is for a VGA output to a external monitor. It is not a RS-232 connection. Use a USB to serial converter.

Yes you can upgrade if you use Parallels or BootCamp and install windows on your Mac. (Note its Mac.. not MAC)
Since RS232 ports are few and far between, even on PCs, use the USB port on the Rev L TIU, it functions the same as comm port
Thanks for replies. Has anyone out there done these upgrades using Vista. Any issues with drivers or license permissions? Phil
Vista? Time for a Windows upgrade!
I use Vista and had no problems downloading the Update from MTH or Uploading to the TIU or the remote.
Update: I got the correct cable to go from my Rev L TIU (USB output) to the USB input of my laptop. When I try to run the program I get a "no serial port detected on this computer" message error. Would a five year old decent quality Dell 1536 Laptop not have a serial port. No mention of it in the manual! Phil
You probably don't have the correct drivers installed, the USB drivers appear as a serial port in Device Manager. Did you download and install the drivers from the www.protosound2.com site?
Thanks again for replies. At this point I have downloaded new drivers for VISTA as per the DCS website instructions from 2007. But when I try running the DCS loader program it keeps searching unsuccessfully for Com 3. I tried all three USB ports hoping one might be the one that shows up as a serial port in the device manager.
Anyway I am ready to buy Windows 7 and using boot camp to install it on the Mac. Chris you mentioned you do this and it works well. Anything I should be aware of in making this change. My Mac software is 10.7.5. Phil
Phil. I have an old HP With Vista. My Rev L. Was found on Comm port 9. It's found the Tiu with no problem. When I updated my Non Rev.L Tiu. It couldn't find the Tiu at first.
it kept telling me to disconnect power and reapply power. I finally changed USB ports.
and it started right away communicating with the Tiu.
sorry I can't be of more help on this.
My loader was 2.30 32 bit
Phil,
With the jumper between ProtoDispatch and ProtoCast disconnected, click on the OPTION tab and tell the Loader Program to "SEARCH FOR TIU".
I have successfully upgraded 4 TIU's and a remote. I installed a driver program from Barry but am still not sure what is going on. It seems that my Rev L TIU is getting powered through the USB cable as well as the remote power supply. The red light stays on even if I remove remote power. So when I am instructed to recycle power, I need to pull and replace two plugs. Doing this led to my first success in upgrading a TIU. But my progress was not smooth. Sometimes, later TIU's would not load and the number of the Com port it was looking for changed. I changed my USB cable to a different outlet and this sometimes got the next one to load. I am finally up to the last remote and it is unsuccessfully looking for Com 6. I have four USB ports one of which is used for the Mouse and no others in use. Would an upgrade to Windows 7 end these problems with serial ports and be worth the investment or might something else be going on? Phil
I don't see a specific reference to upgrading with just the USB power, and I'd err on the side of caution and have aux power supplied to the TIU. In any case, updating with USB power would only apply to a Rev. L unit if it does work.
Interesting, I tried to update the remote with just the USB cable and the update failed. Powered everything down and then powered from the AUX power port and it succeeded.

Did the LED in the TIU light up with the USB cable plugged in?
Yep, even blinked once.
I'd be interested in his input. I didn't go back and retry, so it's possible it was some sort of anomaly and not normal behavior.
I do know that with the USB cord connected, the radio is active! I've forgotten the TIU on my bench and left the power on the laptop, I fire up the other TIU and the remote gets all confused, both are TIU #1.
Guys,
Unfortunately, I've never attempted an upgrade using a Rev. L TIU's USB port for power.
My bench TIU is a Rev. I3 and my layout TIUs, which are 3 Rev. L's, have been getting updated via serial port extension cables since they were earlier models that lacked USB ports. They're underneath the layout and a real pain to remove, so they're going to continue to be updated via their serial ports for the foreseeable future
Here is an update. I had a brand new Rev L TIU I kept as a spare and decided to use it to try and load code into my remaining remote. Lo and behold the red light on this TIU did not light up when only the USB cable was attached. It only came on when I added the remote power. I proceeded to first try and load 4.3 into this new TIU and had the usual problems with it trying to unsuccessfully find various Com ports on my laptop. I succeeded both in loading code into the TIU also the remote as follows. I tried a new usb port. After it tries for awhile a window appears telling me to recycle power and try again. This time I removed the power plug only. The red light went off and when I tried running the again it worked almost immediately. Maybe some of you have an idea of what is going on. But at least one TIU (about a year old but unused before today does not get power through the USB. And something unusual goes on between VISTA, various drivers, and TIU variations. Something is strange!!! Phil
Seems I upgraded a L using the rs-232port. I didn't notice anything different from the other 5 tiu. non L versions? I'll verify after I get it hooked up later.
My "L" TIU's via the serial port upgraded first try without issues (windows 8.1); however, when I tried my remote upgrade it could not find the TIU's. Upgrade to the TIU's ended up using com3, the remote upgrade wanted to use com4. I tired to reload 4.3 on the TIUs and had the same com4 issue. After multiple TIU power offs and rebooting the laptop, I finally got TIU3 to be recognized (com3). I then was able to update 10 remotes via com3. I need to get the USB serial adapter to upgrade my other TIU's.
