Barney's or Mules were used in sunnyside Yards to shove the GG-1's throught the car wash area. Electricity and water didn't work to good on the PRR. I believe Volkmer discusses how they thought an E-44 would do OK in the Enola yard diesel engine wash. They washed one and after they got everything repaired they never washed an E-44 again.

There is a video of a Barney pushing a GG-1 down the prep line floating around out there somewhere.

Thanks,

I was going to ask the same thing.

Outside of a purple dinosaur, a barney is a cable drawn truck that usually rides on a separate set of rails within the running rails used to push cars for unloading where locomotives are unable to go.

Besides the PRR (until it got Horseshoe Curve finished), the Jersey Central used cable powered barneys on its Ashley Planes near Wilkes Barre PA, until the late 1940s. Taking freight cars up and over the planes was much shorter than the CNJ track around the mountain to reach the city. A steam powered winch house stood at the top of the planes.

Also, barneys were used in Pennsylvania to haul canalboats up and over the moutains.
