Any time you have a computer issue and seek help, you must provide some basic info to the assisters.  Please provide a good description of the hardware you are using (type and brand, e.g. HP laptop, Dell desktop, Apple tablet, etc.) as well as the software (usually a browser like Firefox, Chrome, Internet Explorer, etc.).  We may still have to ask you a few questions to assist, but at least we'll know if we have any expertise or experience with what you use.  For example, I have no Apple knowledge or experience, so I would avoid that subject matter.

I also get one half of a black screen on the embedded window. 

I noticed if you click on the thumbnails at the bottom of Mike's post, the video will play OK in a separate window.

Currently on a Dell Vostro 260 running Windows 7 Professional and Internet Explorer (don't know the version, work computer, don't have access change things anyway...)

I had the same result (half black screen) after uploading a video a couple of months ago from my home computer, so I deleted the post.  (PowerSpec computer, Windows 7 professional, Firefox browser.)

Have the same problems with some videos, gave up watching them.  Win 7.

Just like certain posters, their images ALWAYS just come up with as an "X" in a small box on any computer we use, and since it is always the same individuals, it has to be something on their end. Would it be best if the OGR Forum hosted the images and video?

In the case of the videos under discussion here, we are hosting them. We also encourage members to post their still images using the built-in Hoopla "Add Attachments" feature which then puts those images on our server.

However we cannot FORCE people to display their images via that method. Many members link their images to a photo album they have on Flickr, Shutterbug or other photo hosting site. Those images will also display here OK, unless or until the member deletes or moves the original photo. Then the link is broken and we have no way to fix it. That's when you get the red "x."

Maybe this will help some? Using the Video Link Above (I think it's the same one anyway, why I posted this link).

I have Win 10. Using IE 11 (current version) the top 2/3 of the video in the post itself is black and the bottom 1/3 shows that part of the video. It's operated this way as long as I can remember.

Using Google Chrome 51 something both worked just fine. (I didn't get the full 51 version due to the auto update.) When I went to check the version of Chrome it updated itself to v52.0.2743.82 m and now the video in the post does not work at all. It starts, shows a darkened picture and then just hangs. The attachment below works just fine. I don't use Chrome a lot so I can't say how it has operated previously.

 

Here's a test video I tried uploading unsuccessfully about 6 months ago:

The following is an outtake from a video successfully posted about 2 years ago:

The first is .AVI format, the second is .WMV format.  Both were uploaded with the Add Attachments feature.

The .AVI format gives me a black window with sound, black window with sound from the thumbnail, also.  The .WMV format plays OK.

I've on a PowerSpec PC with a 3GHz processor, running Widows 7 Professional and the current Firefox browser.

It seems there's something about the .AVI format that's not compatible.

Here's the latest from Hoopla Tech Support:

"We've been able to capture enough details from the post to reproduce the problem, Rich. It looks to be some kind of issue in Internet Explorer 11. The issue doesn't happen in IE's latest Edge browser. We'll be looking into it!"

Good old Internet Exploder strikes again. 

IE is an absolutely HORRIBLE web browser, and has been from Version 1. No wonder Microsoft has finally replaced it with "Edge."

FIREFOX - it's a wonderful thing.

The latest version of Chrome also has a problem (v52.0.2743.82 m). In Mike G's link the first video starts and just locks up. the second one plays just fine. The one in my link above also starts and then locks up. All these videos worked in my previous version which was v51...something. But, when I went to check the version number it updated itself before I got the complete version number.

Hit the Windows key + I.

next select System

next select Default Apps from the list on the left

hit the reset button.

Close out and try the .mov file in Elliot's link again.

if no joy, then you'll have to go into choose default apps by file type and choose the Video & TV app for .mov files.

The iPhone and iPad files may give you problems also, but this is a Microsoft default file, so the built-in player will play it.

Somehow that movie has been converted to mp4 audio, hence the black window and audio only.

Yep...Internet Exploder has been recognized for YEARS in the IT community as a bloated, crash-prone, security nightmare. That is exactly why Firefox, Chrome, Opera and many other browsers carved a very nice market share for themselves while Internet Exploder slowly lost ground to them.

Microsoft finally wised up and released Edge.

Thanks.  I don't know how it happened.  The test was shot with a still camera that had video capabilities, but it did also the same thing with a video shot with my phone.

Oh, well.  Got a brand new, shiny Canon video camera I've been needing to try out...

As an IT Professional for many years, Rich speaks the truth.

The ratio of IT Professionals that condemn, criticize and reject Internet Explorer to those that support IE is staggering!

It is truly that horrible.
