I had a pleasant weekend with my wife, brother, and his wife attending an exhibit of O. Winston Link's prints at a gallery in Staunton, VA.  Sponsored by the Augusta County Historical Society, it included an interesting lecture by the author of Life Along the Line, a book on Link's photography.

The next day we arrived at the VA Museum of Transportation, where we expected to be approached for funds to restore 611.  But I was surprised to see that there was just a small holder containing the mailed appeal brochures and a box where we could put our donations.

We had planned this trip for a long time, but our visit now was quite timely, what with all the excitement about the J's possible re-steaming.  The museum has quite a diverse transportation collection, and we didn't expect to see a covered wagon as well as a Jupiter rocket!

Sorry, no photos, as I forgot my camera.

If possible, you really must plan a future trip to the Link Museum.  If you enjoyed what you saw and heard at that Staunton event, you will be absolutely astonished at what you see at the museum, which houses the full Link collection along with the camera equipment he used and a ton of other stuff.  They also have a very nice gift shop with just about anything and everything related to Link and his work.  It truly is a first-class museum in every respect.

Visit there and then treat the wife to a superb lunch or dinner along the very active NS tracks at the Hotel Roanoke, formerly owned by the N&W.

This same recommendation--the highest I can possibly give--applies to anyone who is visiting or passing through the Roanoke area.  Folks always are drawn to the 611, of course, but I gotta tell ya, you'll remember the Link Museum as the highlight of your visit.
