Going thru my storage closet today and came across a Weaver RS-3 engine that I bought a few years ago because I liked that it was the CNJ red "coast guard" scheme and at that time (and even now) I couldn't find either the K Line or MTH version of this engine.  So my question is whether it will be compatible with my Lionel tubular track and switches.  I know that I could just try it, but it is so new that the handrails haven't been put yet.  And if the general opinion of forumites is that it won't really work well, then I'll just sell it (and the dummy).  As I said, these are older and the boxes say "stock #" 5521 and 5521-0.  I believe that the engine is the "chain drive" that I see mentioned occasionally on the forum. So, back to the original question: Will the engine work without incident on tubular track or do I post them on the "Buy/Sell" forum?

Give Weaver Models a call and ask for Gary or Joe. They willbe happy to set you on the straight and narrow.

Also, be advised that early Weaver chain drives have a problem with gears cracking off, which means no pull. It does not matter if the engine was used not not, kind of like plastic zinc pest. Not to worry: Parts are available, and the fix is straight forward. The issue was discussed in this recent thread:

This was originally a two rail engine adapted to three rail.  The track profile isn't as much an issue as the tightest curves.  it will run poorly on anything less than O-42 and it's a poor puller even on straight track because of the light weight.  It is a beautiful model and possibly the best looking model of the RS-3 out there.  You may want to hang onto it and see if you can use the shell on another chassis.
