What did you do on your layout today?

Chris, LED's are the way to go now a days. Just wondering if your using them with a dimmer switch?

Bob, its going to be like Christmas around your house! More money for trains, but don't forget Momma gets some of that also! LOL

Well these photos are not of what I did just today but many days during the past couple of months.  As you may see, all of the pre-planning sometimes goes up in smoke.  Look at the tunnel portals.  They were just fine until I tried to run my RDC and Train Master......LOL   Some cosmetic work is on the "To do" list.  

Brian, thanks for posting those pics again. What I have planned for the next table is two railroad bridges. A double track and a single track. Then at the front will be the flat car bridge as a road going to the Coal tipple. I'll have to get the dimensions of the Menard's bridges to see if two will work. Under them I am hoping to incorporate two waterfalls. Yesterday was an all day train outing with the train show in the morning and a get together with the little train group by me. But going into today and I am glad the weather was nice Friday I received my nursery items and I had to plant them. They are planted so I went to the attic to grab a legacy switcher and take it to the basement. Going to hot wire the track to see where I will need to run feeders. I'll try to start it tonight but I got the whole day to mess with it........Paul

Congrats on another successful outing, Mitch. Now wouldn't it be interesting to have both trains on one track so everyone could watch the razorbacks chase after dinner???

Making a loading dock for a corner of the layout. Will stain it tonight, and the crane from Narrow Gauge Modeling should come in tomorrow. Once I get it built and painted the dock will be complete.

Y'know... I accidentally bought one of those some years ago. Thought it was just a Lionel Lenny the Lion boxcar. But I guess I can credit Lenny with the absence of pesky Gi-raffs, Pink Flamingos, and their associated droppings on my layout   

Technically, it's not my layout (it's the train clubs - South Florida Railway Museum) and it happened yesterday, but I took a tree making class taught by one of the members.  Trees were made from sesame stalks that were further pruned.  We need to make 600 trees for the HO layout and each of the members has to make 20 trees.  The foam block shows some of the trees that were made (not all by me).  The white substance on the trunk is caulk that was applied in order to give the trunk a realistic uneven bark appearance once everything is painted over.

Flamingo ears across the globe perk up.........

I like the LEDs already. This just adds to the collection on the ceiling and removes the fluorescent tubes from service.

I have the first 2 banks on dimmers now. The only issue is they do not go completely out when the dimmers are at their lowest setting. I'm told there may be an adjustment. I just need to find it. The new banks are just on a switch for now. I do plan to install a dimmer on these as well. Meanwhile, time to put the layout back together!

New delivery:

I bid on some original 072 (#711's) turnouts and they arrived, yesterday.

Didn't need them but got them in case I want to expand some storage tracks.

They came with the original boxes and inserts.

Two of the light covers were broken and no controllers were included.

comparison of the old versus the new (old is on the right).

I've read that some say the old are much better than the new.

The 711's have an all metal base as well as the frog and guard rails are also all metal.

Chris- many LED rated dimmers have a low-end trim adjustment on the face of the dimmer. Take the wall plate off and see if there is a small lever or wheel. You can adjust it until the lights go out.

Dan- the layout looks great. No worries about the lopsided tunnel. We're all a little lopsided.....

I got the idea to move a Gateman to the front of the layout in front of Ivor’s shed and add a car-dashboard switch so my young visitors could pop the gateman out of his hut at will...

I had to make an eye doctor appointment on short notice Friday morning, and was lucky enough to get a 9 AM Saturday. Still not sure if it's pink eye, but she gave me some drops.

Home opener for the Loons, our MLS soccer team. The stadium was only a half mile away from the doctor on the U of M campus, but the gates didn't open til 11:15. Even after waiting for the prescription, there was still over an hour to kill. Why not hit the hobby store, about five miles away? I don't go there very often, but it felt like old times, being there on a Saturday morning, with no sense of urgency, just wandering the aisles. The big purchase was a couple of Lionel jigsaw puzzles, a few incidentals for the layout, and a couple back issues of OGR. Alex Mueller's name caught my eye on one cover. I know his layout! After the game, went to a Thai place with friends, and never got downstairs.

Sunday started with "train church", hanging out with my squinting 2 rail buddies. Bunch of N scalers in that group, as well as some HO guys. When I got home, it was back to work. I cleaned most of the rail over at Western Ave, getting the glue and paint off the rail heads. After that, I finished stacking my ceiling tiles over at Hoffman, then began the carving process. I use just three things to do this carving. First, a spray bottle of water, mainly to keep the dust down, but it also softens the material. Second a wire brush, which leaves nice striations in the sedimentary rock. Finally a utility knife to cut crevices.

I'm about half done with this part, then I'll prime and paint it. I'll be working from actual photos of the area.

This is getting exciting. When the upper section foam work is done, and all covered with greenery, I'll call my guy back for another photo session. I think he'll be sufficiently impressed.
