What engines do you find ugly? Here is mine, the PRR DD1:

Any diesel built after 1964!
Any high hood diesel.
Any high hood diesel.
WHAT! High hood diesels are cool! That is, if you can call a diesel cool.
Now this is butt ugly!!!
Any high hood diesel.
What diesels have low hoods?
Any diesel built after 1964!
Ditto.
bl2 - not enough paint in the world to cover that much ugly!
Any high nose. They all have high hoods.
I stand corrected.
I don't care for GP30s either.

Oh, now I got you.
But, I must disagree on the GP30, as that's why I stated "Any diesel built after 1964.". Personally, I really like the original N&W high short hood GP30 units, and would really like a model of one in 3-Rail SCALE. That being said, I really don't care to take a second mortgage on the house to purchase one of the announced Lionel models.

Any diesel built after 1964!
Ouch! That smarts, brings tears to my eyes...
"Ugly" is probably too strong of a word. I guess it's more like, "Don't really care for that much."
I second the BL2. That was ugly.
I don't like the cowling or whatever that was extending from the cab roof back on the GP30. I know it gave the GP30 a unique look but I prefer the classic look of the EMDs that followed.
The Aerotrain power unit:
And some designers need to take a class in asthetics:

GE could have come up with something better than copying an English Lowery!

GE should have not rushed this out the door!
Never should have challenged EMD designers for sure!

Again, never deviate from OEM design!
EMD should have left the nose alone! That door Kills the Asthetics!
GE diesels -old & new.

Well, maybe. I must admit that I have met one or two RR Trainmasters that would not have been selected for models in GQ Magazine.
However, the Train Master diesel units were pretty nice looking, in my opinion, plus they were built prior to 1964!
Obviously that THING was built after 1964!!!!!

Indeed.....but I had to post that pic. Whatever engineer designed that thing...holy crap...no taste.
Any diesel built after 1964!
Ditto.

I couldn't agree more.

To be fair, Engineers do NOT design these, things of the modern era, to be "tasteful". Sure it looks ugly but, it was VERY easy to manufacture and had LOTS of room in the cab, and wasn't going to attain speeds over 65MPH.

Good thing we're not talking about people!

EMD BL2.
Slugs aren't very attractive, but do they count?

GP-20,BL-2,Trainmaster and Center cabs.UGH!
Any diesel before 1964, Except E and F units, my favorites.
New York Central Hudson.
Uh oh. There is a large crowd developing outside my door. They are smashing through. They have weapons and a lynching rope........
(just kidding. Some locomotives are utilitarian in appearance and function, but really not ugly. But I was always mystified by Big Jim's strange "streamlined" N&W 4-8-0)

WT*? I can't believe it says N&W on the tender! That looks like a steam powered suppository!
The nose is too blunt to be a suppository! Ooch!!!
Any high hood modern diesel.
I'll admit that some cab units look OK. My $0.02

ANY steam engine with air pumps mounted on the smokebox!
OH, and the Commodore Vanderbilt!
I think I also see a crowd coming with torches....

Gee, and here I am hunting photos of steam switchers looking for 0-6-0's with flying
pumps, so ALL my engines can have Elescos and pumps on their smokeboxes....and
while not "a diesel fan", I like BL-2's, which look designed for visibility while doing their job. (I also saw one or two at work on the Monon) Of course, the early box cab
diesels were plain and utilitarian, like the early electrics. Wasn't there a previous
thread like this that had version photos that outuglied all of the above?
