I can't believe how many cars have not been made by MTH/Lionel!! I was watching a Pentrex tape the other night of the Southern Pacific in the San Joaquin Valley. I looked at all the following rolling stock...

modern Southern Pacific box cars...
Burlington Northern centerflow hoppers...
LNAC bow cars...
Intermodal cars....
Missouri Pacific box cars
MKT box cars....
modern Union Pacific box cars...
Golden West Box cars...
Variations on Railbox...
Santa Fe Hoppers...

I mean if you like to run a couple of SP Dash 9's or Tunnel motors together it doesn't appear that there is a lot that you can use.

Do others notice it...or have I been drinking too much kool-aide... Big Grin

Given the number of types of cars and the number of possible liveries in the period, it is understandable that MTH/Lionel missed many. While Kline, Weaver and Atlas did fill in a lot of gaps, there is still a lot of stuff not made.

The forum threads on what folks want in the "next" catalog usually include requests for "never" made rolling stock as well as never made engines.I suppose many pieces will never be made because the economics of the train business will not support filling the gap.

On the other hand, we do have a lot of stuff (such as Christmas, Halloween, Area 51, etc.) which you will not see on your old films or videos. Smile

Waiting for someone to make a ALCO Century 415
Mopac and TP rolling stock has been terribly neglected.MTH and Lionel insist on doing crazy fantasy schemes based on the Mopac merchandise cars.Atlas has offered more correct cars than anyone but they are very hard to find as they sell out quickly.Lionel did make a nice 40' boxcar and open hopper a few years back. There are dozens of very attractive and eye catching cars left to make.A lot of the later cars have the neat Eagle crossing the sun logo.(One historic note:It's NOT a Buzzsaw-it's the sun shining,MP's top passenger train before the Eagle was the Sunshine Limited,it's referenced in all the early MP literature and early logos.)
