I have these switches on my layout. Looking at the info available there is a contradiction of where the insulating pins go.
The O72 and O612 shows the insulating pins on the inside of the "V". The O22 shows the insulating pins differently. I have included some pics.
I am curious to know why the difference in location of the insulating pins

Simply put, the control rails are positioned differently.
I could argue that the inside of the "v" control rails would be more natural so you wouldn't need take the extra step to cut the outside rail, but the O22 design goes back to their introduction in 1938. The precursor, the 011 switch also did the same. I'm guessing the Lionel engineer who made the design decision is unable to enlighten us a century later.
Just positioned there by chance really. e.g. early 1122s used a slice in the long rail and put the pin and circuit on the stub there. Later ones leave th long rail intact and use the short straight rail to go to the coil instead.
(do you understand the anti-derail system and how it works?)
Thanks kind fellows for the feedback! Yes...I do get the de-rail feature which is why the different placement of the pins piqued my curiosity!
