Robert,
Which Atlas modern locomotive offering were you referring to? I almost exclusively buy their modern 2-rail freight cars but I don’t think they import any modern locomotives. The most modern locomotive they offered were the GP60 & Dash-8, nothing newer than that unlike MTH who had imported multiple runs of the SD70ACe, SD70M-2, Dash-9, AC4400CW, ES44AC & ES44DC.
These are just my opinion,
Thanks,

If I were modeling modern diesels, sure, I would go for MTH, Atlas 2-rail because of the cost. If I were modeling 1st generation diesels, I would check out the shows for Central Locomotive Works kits or built up models. They have good mechanisms and are well constructed. They usually are not expensive, actually cheaper than the current MTH diesels. I have some Alco FAs. These may not be as well detailed as the current plastic models but they are very sturdy and run well.
I haven't followed Atlas diesels, but you are right. I don't recall their making
anything that is running now. I had some fairly modern MTH 3-rail diesels, SD60s, SD90s, SD70 and got rid of all of them. I am not into the modern electronics, sounds, or circuit boards and traction tires. I now buy exclusively 2-rail. It is what you like, and I like the big steamers and earlier diesels.
Although it is not available yet Sunset Models has announced reservations are being taken for a Santa Fe Prarie (2-6-2).
Yo, Bob...
Has Scott yet decided which class of ATSF 2-6-2 will be offered? (1800, I hope, I hope.)
And.....how far away is the reservation total for this becoming a reality?? Been a long time a-percolatin'.....
