Just thinking out load. Why did Lionel not make a 500 series crane car? The 520 searchlight car used the O upper section, they could have used a O 800 series superstructure to make a 500 series wrecker. Guess I'll have to create one.

You don't have to create one, they did make a 500 series crane, I have one. I believe they came in two different paint schemes. I'm not sure if they made more than one run but they do seem pretty scarce.
By the way, when I say "they" made one I mean MTH not Lionel.

I do have a derelict 810, and may have a junky 500 series car. I may add it to my project list.

not sure how MTH made the 500 series crane car. I know they used the cab of a 200 series crane. Did they mount it on a 500 series flat car or did they just take a 200 series crane car and mount it on 500 series trucks?
It would not have been unusual for MTH to just use the same photo for both cars, changing the color digitally, even if the cars as manufactured were different. Be interested to see what you come up with John. All I have is a vintage 219.
My guess would be they took a 500 series flat and mounted all 200 series crane parts.
One step above just mounting 500 series trucks on a 200 series car.
I have seen the o gauge crane mounted on a 500 series flat and it looked great.
MTH did a pretty good job of down sizing the crane. They didn't put a 200 series or 2800 series crane on a 500 series frame, they actually resized the cab but not the boom and it looks like they got it right, at least to me.
MTH never fails to impress.

Very interesting. That's all new dies for everything but the boom, they didn't skimp. This seems to be consistent with one of Mr. Wolf's recurring themes with tinplate - to fill out the traditional tinplate line with things that were never done but could have been. I'm thinking of the 200 and 500 ore cars and the flat cars with cars and trucks for loads...
Thanks for getting these out and taking the pictures John, it makes a good side-by-side comparison.

That dark green and red 500 series crane car would sure look great in my Christmas train set. I hope Lionel Corporation makes another run of these.
