Those Hiawatha "What-if" sets are pretty neat - right now the Seaboard one is catching my eye but time will tell if I go with one of those of the OG Hiawatha which my collection is sorely lacking. Just wish these were offered as a proper set with accompanying set box - oh well. Glad to see the 18" aluminum cars return

Speaking of which, The City of Miami looks great and will surely be an excellent set to pick up.

Lastly, I'm gonna have to think long and hard on the Polar Express. Currently I do not own any PE items and am excited to get a scale version, but I'm not 100% sold on the maroon engine. I like the idea of doing a special 20th anniv. set, but wish that the normal black version was offered as a set as well. Either way, I'm sure this set is gonna command some hefty price tags in the years to come and I might just end up going for it.

While not all that prototypical, I can appreciate Lionel making an "E6 that looks almost like an E5" with the Colorado & Southern (CB&Q) model on pages 52 and 53.  With the expectation, valid or otherwise, that Lionel will run the California Zephyr in the future, I will be picking up the CB&Q passenger cars for what looks like the "Texas Zephyr" that Lionel is running with these. 

I am very happy to see that Lionel is re-introducing the Milwaukee Road Hiawatha 4-4-2 Class "A"s! And that they thought about providing the other three numbers for these engines....1;2;4. Since they brought out #3 previously; and the Milwaukee of course owned four of the "A"s.

What I could do without is the whistle steam. The "A"s only had an air horn and no steam whistle. It would be great if Lionel eliminated the steam whistle sound, whistle smoke; and added a sound chip of an air horn like what is on the SP Daylight!  Maybe the price would drop a tad. I have had my Weaver engines upgraded and have the option for steam whistle or the SP type air horn; along with 4 chuffs per revolution.

Of course this is just my opinion. But I am glad to see Lionel bringing the Hiawathas back out, and the new aluminum passenger cars too!!

As for the catalog, I have been waiting on the scale PE so that is certainly on the list. My concern is the car colors... the new observation car looks like a different color.

It seems that by putting “E5” in quotes, they are conceding that it is an E6 painted to look similar to an E5.  Lionel did the same thing several years ago with their TMCC version.

I do like Lionel’s ABB look, though, instead of the usual ABA.

Don’t know if it’s the right thread or not. But here it goes. I see that the SP speed lettering SD45 has the incorrect Light package!!!’ The SP had 2 different SD45 versions with Soeed Lettering  in the early 90’s ! The original SP SD 45 had the top cab flashing lights and red  mats light at the nose taken off. Only leaving the nose mounted headlights and deck mounted lights . The SD45’s bought secondhand had the standard headlight at the top of the cab and deck mounted lights. I Model SP and would hate to receive it with the wrong lights package , light the previous release of the tunnel motors. So if anyone knows a Lionel official , please let them know . Trying to decide over the Lionel SD 45 or Atlas SP Sd 45

Also forgot , anyone has a complete list of dealer custom runs. For 2024 Lionel. Vol 1 . I only seen Mr Muffins.

It'd be great if the forum had a pinned, rolling topic where current custom runs can be consolidated in one list and tracked over time. Having to subscribe to multiple mailing lists just to try and make sure I don't miss a given custom run that I wish I knew about before it was too late is a bit of a chore, to be sure.

The builders plan in the book Illinois Central Streamliners 1936-1946, by Paul M. Somers, shows 84 feet, 6 inches, coupled length with 13 inches from the center of the coupler to the end of the car, which means the car body length is 82 feet, 4 inches (84' 6" - (2 x 13")).

CHESAPEAKE &  OHIO 800 series and 900 series PS-2 2-bay covered hoppers built by Pullman-Standard during 1954, 1955  with 2 additional exterior posts on each side. Injection mold the seperate posts in a small mold and weld them carefully on the sides before painting the covered hoppers.

The original C&O scheme and the Chessie System scheme are needed for the C&O 800, 900 series covered hoppers.
