Hello,

I received a lionel starter set for x-mas, it came with a (18V DC 3000ma) transformer that plugs into the side of the track. I am looking into getting the 4-6-6-4 imperial challenger that is due to come out in july 2017. I have decent amount of tracks already and set came with a lionchief cordless controller.

Do I need to buy this DCS thing separately or does the trains come with the Control system? Am I able to use the transformer that came with my starter set or do I need to buy a new one?

thanks in advance

Welcome to the world of trains!  For that Challenger, you will need a new transformer.  You don't need the DCS system, but DCS allows you to access all of the more advanced features of the engine.  I would recommend getting an MTH Z-1000 transformer (http://mthtrains.com/40-1000), as well as a Lionel FasTrack terminal section (http://www.lionel.com/products...nal-section-6-12016/).  This terminal section will let you connect the Z-1000 or just about any other transformer.

You might even run into issues on older, smaller ones by MTH. It has to do with the way the AC wave is modified. The Z1000 is pretty good advice as an all around pretty universally capable unit. (Some PW units might have whistle issues, that can be overcome)

You have some time to research your choices too. However you plan on attacking the hobby in the future, this transformer and system choice should be made accordingly, because too much power now beats not enough power later, hands down IMO.

The lioncheif should work OK on the Z1000 too.
