Yesterday, my friend Mike and I headed out to catch the Office Car Special,
designated OCS-1, operated by the NECR and P&W to showcase their
recently-rebuilt route to southern New England to Canadian National officials
and shippers. The train operated from St. Albans, VT to Worcester, MA. We
chased it from Three Rivers, MA to Plainfield, CT.
The consist was NECR GP-38 3857, P&W GP-38 2008, P&W HEP car, P&W diner
"Connecticut", P&W coach "Massachusetts", with Canadian National business car
"Sandford Fleming". The train departed St. Albans about 7:00 AM, arriving
Palmer, MA around noon, where crews changed and lunch was provided by the
Steaming Tender Restaurant. The trains departed Palmer and ran non-stop to
Worcester via the NECR-P&W interchange in Willimantic, CT. The two roads are
working hard to gain traffic from disgruntled CSX customers.
