In the last 25 years I attended 45 Yorks, only missing 5 in all of those years. One due to the passing of my Father-in-law, another due to a poorly timed European Cruise, and 3 due to Covid.

My train bank overfloweth!

God willing I will be there. I haven’t been to York since 2019 and to me it seems like forever. I can’t imagine not going for 26 years! It means you have never been to the Orange Hall or saw that the Black Hall usually has a modular layout. You saw the Yellow Hall (I assume that was in use in 1995) but that is always locked up now. And you never attended any of the OGR Forum meetings which started up when I first started to go which was in 2001. A lot of changes but I am sure you enjoy the meet. It still has that certain charm that no other meet has. While I am looking forward to York I want time to go slow so I can enjoy the summer.

As much as I want to, I won't be able to this year. I'm only limited to October York's due to our busy season every April at work. And I am currently saving up for a house. Hopefully either October 2022 or 2023 is when I'll be able to attend my first York.

Phil, what you mentioned, about attending OGR Forum meetings at York, is what I was hoping for, and would be the main reason for me to go. As nice as all the trains are (and I love them all), it's the people that interest me the most. It seems to me that York is the best place to meet the maximum number of Forum members at one time.

As soon as it is determined when and where Forum members are meeting at York, for breakfast, lunch, dinner or whatever, please share that info on the Forum so we all can plan our visit accordingly. Arnold

I am planning on going this year with my father and a good friend. It will be our first time going so we're still trying to figure out how to get our badges ahead of time. If any of y'all can help that would be very appreciated.

Arnold, the OGR Forum Meeting at the Fairgrounds is usually held at 2pm on Friday afternoon. It originally was held in the grandstand but in later years they have moved it to other places usually due to the weather. When they had the very first meeting I believe the purpose of the meeting was for OGR Forum members from all over the country to get to meet each other and put a face and personality to the comments on the screen but soon it seemed to me to turn into a sort of commercial. They usually have representatives from all the major train companies who would explain about and or display new products and it is hard to talk to other guys while this is going on unless you are sitting right next to someone. I don’t mean to knock it as it was usually interesting and you could ask questions but the way information travels these days I felt I was going to find out anyway and you could go to the booth to ask your question there. After going for many years I started to get the feeling it wasn’t worth it for me so I stopped going because I usually have only day at York and I wanted to spend as much time checking out all the halls. I think you would be better off to go to the other places forum members meet at which I believe is the Round the Clock Diner and at Quaker Steak. I know Peter (Putnam Div) has mentioned the Round the Clock Diner and I don’t know anything specific about the other place. I believe Peter said it would be Thursday morning. I am sure Peter and others will post information about these meetings as it gets closer to York. I usually can’t make these meetings due to only being there one day but I might be able to this year. Maybe. I hope I run into you there. Good luck.

Yes, I plan on attending.  Other than for the Chinese Virus I have not missed York since 2004.

Haven’t decided yet, have to see how I’m doing as we get closer. If I do decide to go, I’ll probably do another Thursday 3-3-3... three hour drive out, three hours wandering around, three hours back home - I’ve never claimed to be bright

Yep, have a room reservation and am fully vaccinated.  Arriving on Thursday and leave on Saturday.

It will be interesting to see how much of York has changed since COVID 19 stopped the show last year.

Also this will be the first York with the "New MTH" or no MTH at all.

I went in fall 2017 and spring 2018.  I hope to be able to go.  Hopefully I got my back surgery in time to recuperate well enough to go.  It is a good incentive to do everything PT tells me to do when that starts.

As sure as the sun shines in Southern California, Lynley and I will be there!!

Not sure how early we’ll arrive but I’m hoping to be able to visit with friends and family back East and all of the OGR Universe.  And maybe catch a Phillies playoff game or a Flyers game while in the area!

Paula and I plan to be there. Reservations made.

Arnold........some where around 4-5 weeks before York, I will put up a new thread for the Thursday, pre-York breakfast at the Round-the-Clock Diner (Route 30, just west of I-83). We usually arrive around 7-7:30 and Then leave to congregate in the Orange Hall lobby. The Diner is always gracious to have a large area on the west wall empty for us......I usually call to confirm after Labor Day.

Thursday night is the OGR Forum get-together at Quaker Steak.

Friday AM breakfast is usually open

Friday afternoon is the OGR Forum meeting in the Gold Hall Conference Room

Friday evening, a group of us usually have dinner together......last time it was Olive Garden and we had about 15 people.......I’ll likely get a reservation for a group as that time gets closer.....

Stay tuned.....the Eastern Division is planning events for earlier in the week and there may be more opportunities to get together.

Me too. I am in. Been looking forward to this event for almost 2 years. I only live 1 hour away so will be driving there everyday. Only missed (2) of them in 35 years.

Attending and volunteering. I’ll see Dan and Hope Danielson today when I stop by their shop. I’ll ask if there are any confirmed activities or updates. I think the Eastern Division was planning for increased Covid safety procedures, but am almost certain those will be adjusted to the situation in October.

I was planning on going - then my college room mate invited me to see the latest iteration of the Grateful Dead in Denver on the same weekend. I'm going to wrap some railfanning in Colorado and a ride on the Zephyr through the Rockies into the trip. I'm sorry I will miss this York.

I live less then an hour so I will be there Thursday and Friday.  Get ready for Round the clock, and Olive Garden for good eats.

I miss York so much.  Dad and I have gone since 86.  We have lost some dear friends but I have wonderful memories of times spent together.

I met with Dan Danielson this morning and he confirmed the following for the October York Show:

- Registration will open online on or before July 17th. An announcement will be made through the TCA email list prior.

- They expect the tables to sell out. Aisles will be wider for adequate social distancing, causing the removal of around 170 tables.

- Member tables will be in the Black and Yellow Halls.

- Monday activity - Movie Night in the Blue Hall. Under Siege 2, Steven Seagal is the cook on a train in this one?

- Tuesday Night Reception 5:30p-7p. Hall TBD, finger food, etc.

- No activities on Wednesday.

- Show opens Noon on Thursday.

All information should be considered as subject to adjustment. Hope this helps your planning.

Got my hotel, and my April 2020 badge is already in the car, I'm ready!

I'll also be able to deliver two locomotives for a customer that have been sitting under my layout for two years!  I was hoping he forgot them, but he has a better memory than I do.

Thanks for posting. I don't know what I was hoping for earlier in the week, but a Monday night movie and a Tuesday night reception doesn't really motivate me to come out early. Particularly with an empty day after the events and before the show opening.

Memories of great bandit shows swirl in my head, but that's delusional and sort of like being able to get a new 65 Mustang for $1,995. It's not gonna happen.

I dunno, pent-up demand, pent-up supply, and the TCA meet is short 170 tables  ...  sounds like promising conditions for bandit meets.

I never attended the legendary "back in the day" meets, but I imagine the bandit meets in October ought to good by recent standards. Hope I can go!

I'll be there Thursday morning thru Saturday.    Hotel reservations were made in November 2020.    I'm currently researching April 2022 options.   My normal Hampton Inn, or try car camping at the Fairgrounds?   

I stayed at a cheap place with some Pittsburgh guys up the highway towards Harrisburg the two times I went to York.

I don’t want to drive very far to and from the hotel since I’ll still be recovering from back surgery.  I realize I’ll pay more than before.  What recommendations does anyone have?

Mark, two places we have stayed are the Sheraton Four Points (right behind Round the Clock Diner) and the Homewood Suites by Hilton on I-83. Both are very nice and only ten minutes from the Fairgrounds.

Thank you Brian!  I remember seeing both on the list of hotels.  I’ll take a look at them.

It's official! My father, my friend, and I are going to York for the first time! Just made the reservations for a flight, room and board, and transportation. Now, all we have to do is register, get our badges, and not fall off the log.

You probably don't remember it, but I met you on my first day on my first trip to York in 2014.  It was outside near where the Safety and Brown Hall.  I recall you wearing a Jets shirt, and you telling me "If you see something you want for a good price, buy it.  It won't be there when you get back."   - You was right!!!

I believe you was still working then.  I was with Chris Bojanower & MartyE. 

This will be trip 5 now - long trek from Utah.

I’m looking forward to seeing old friends and friends I haven’t met before.  As soon as I can get downstairs, which should be in a day or two, I’ll make a hotel reservation.

Out of curiosity, how do most of y'all bring back what you have just bought from the show? (i.e. carry on luggage, or shipping through someone.) Also, do some of the major venders offer shipping options?

As I recall (although I have never used it), I believe they set up a UPS shipping location on site for this event, if you prefer to go that route.

So with regard to the "shipping option", I have been told in the orange hall, "I dont have it here but I can ship it from the store". I think I said I would see if I can find it on site and I must have ultimately done that.  I doubt that anyone is going to want to sell something at the show then haul it home to ship to you. If its in the hall and you buy it, you're carrying it with you.

With regard to the UPS on site, I've never used it, but I would have to imagine thats the absolute most expensive way you can possibly get stuff home. Its a UPS store, so whatever UPS says it costs, double it at the minimum + marked up prices for the box and packing matter. I would suggest you accumulate whatever you buy, then go to the Lowe's on Carlisle road and buy yourself a moving box and some bubble wrap. Self box and pack whatever you've got and find the post office, a fedex office, or a UPS Customer Center and ship it to yourself. Depending on how far you have to go and what you buy, bringing a large hard sided suitcase and the $50 checked bag fee may be more economical.

@Allan Miller, @Boilermaker1: Thank you both for y'all's help! I had a feeling there would be a way to ship them from the show. I will probably take a hard sided bag and do it that way. Thankfully, Southwest doesn't charge for bags and coming from Texas I imagine shipping will be high. Thanks again, and happy railroading!

As for shipping, one of my friends goes to OfficeMax in one of the strip malls along US Route 30 and sends it via FedEx from the OfficeMax store. 

I usually take it home myself but there is a UPS group at the Blue and Silver Hall in the main entrance area.

I've been eagerly awaiting the return of the York meet. I've had my hotel reservations in place for awhile and plan to have selling tables. I expect this York in particular to be very well attended!

My April 2020 badge has been burning a hole in my badge holder for over 19 months now, so I will be there, hopefully in my usual spot in Blue Hall.  My travel plans are not yet finalized, but my typical York trip means leaving on a Tuesday night, spending the night in Gettysburg (cheaper hotel), hitting the bandit meets first thing Wednesday morning with some of my fellow Pgh. Ind. Hi-Railers, and in the afternoon visiting hobby shops and other train-related points of interest within a few hours drive of York (there is really a lot to see and do in the area, under normal circumstances).  This trip will be interesting to see if some of the small restaurants and businesses we frequent have survived the last year.

Mark - I stay at the La Quinta which is in the same parking lot as Quaker Steak and Lube where we gather on Thursday night.  It's a 10 minute drive from the fairgrounds and is a newer hotel (~10 yrs old).   It may fit your needs.

Greg, thank you.  I’ll check out that one too!  Based on the surgeon’s expectation, a day at York should be doable in October, but I don’t want to add a car ride to the burden after a long day.  It was okay before my surgeries, but …well it takes a long time to recover nowadays.  I guess the company did the best thing pushing me out on retirement when I was 63.

The Wyndham Garden is the location of the largest bandit meet, it has a great breakfast included in the price of the room (pre-Covid, don't know what it will be in October), and there is a decent bar/restaurant on site.  In the past, it's been worth the extra $20 per night for the location and amenities. However, this time around the price is a lot higher than other nearby places.

My reservation for October is at LaQuinta - near the fairgrounds, less expensive, and I've had good experiences with LQ before.

Avoid the Super 8 on US 30 and the Rodeway Inn near downtown - sketchy areas.

I recommend joining a loyalty program for whatever chain you prefer - you'll get a good rate and earn points. Don't use a third-party website - if there's a problem, you have an additional layer of bureaucracy to deal with.  Use AAA, AARP, or senior discount (I've found the AARP discount to usually be the best. And be sure to get a fully cancellable reservation, because you never know what might come up.

I've had back issues in the past - got by with injections and fortunately didn't need surgery - so I can relate.  Just a fyi - the meet has a bus which goes around the meet stopping at every hall so you don't have to walk.

7 years is a long time and yes, I was employed back then and retired in April 2016 doing the happy dance! Have not seen Chris there since then as well.

I always see Marty E. there as he is almost a local living near York! Glad you took my advice. Buy it when you see it!

I stay at the same place. Real nice, clean and rates are quite good considering how close it is to the fairgrounds. And breakfast there is good!

Pre-pandemic, you could reserve a scooter to get yourself around the various halls. But those western Pennsylvania drivers are a bit concerning... my ankles are scared 🤣🤣🤣

It sounds like La Quinta is the place to check out.  Thank you everyone!!  I will take advantage of the bus to cut down the walking if necessary.  Paul, I have never driven indoors, but we Westsylvanians are definitely used to dodging potholes; so dodging TCAers shouldn’t be a problem!

I just made a reservation for my wife, Shawn, and me to stay at La Quinta Inn & Suites by Windham York. We will be checking in on Oct. 21st and staying for 2 nights.

Just a couple of further thoughts re accommodations...

A couple of Yorks ago, a forum member posted about having his LaQuinta reservation cancelled by the hotel at the last minute due to a "water leak".  At the time, LQ's rates were far lower than other nearby hotels - my inner cynic wonders if LQ did this in order to sell the rooms at a higher price.  As I recall from his posts, they weren't particularly helpful regarding finding other accommodations. I'm hoping this won't happen again in October.

If you use a loyalty program but haven't traveled recently, be sure to stay on top of it. This morning, I checked my loyalty program. Turns out that my points balance, which was almost enough to pay for a room, had been zeroed out due to "inactivity" without notice. Well duh, nobody has been able to travel for over a year!  After calling customer service, they graciously made a "one time exception" and reinstated the points.

I have my reservations made with La Quinta for three nights. Did not make them directly with the hotel. La Quinta (direct) room rates were higher and they had, on their website at least, a pre-payment required, no refund/no cancellation policy posted (that may have changed by now; I have not checked recently). Anyhow, made my reservation via Booking.com

Looks like we'll have a nice crowd of friendly faces at the La Quinta this coming York!

I'll get to enjoy a 1.5 to 2 hr drive after we arrive at BWI (Baltimore) airport.  A direct flight is available, where MDT (Harrisburg) requires a connecting flight.  Cheaper too, also paying for 3 tickets.

When I stop to say Hi at your booth, I'll see if my 12 yr old train buddy can untie your shoes while were talking...

So far, our group plans on staying at a Tru by Hilton located right where I-30 and I-83 intersect. It looked to be a fairly new hotel so hopefully, we won't have a bad time. For flights, we plan on taking an early flight through Southwest, change flights in Dallas (As we say in northern Texas, if you want to go to heaven you have to go through Dallas), and then arrive at the Baltimore/D.C. airport. From there drive north to York on the 21st and do the reverse on the 23rd.

Good choice for those staying there. Nice place plus an indoor pool. Really looking forward to the social aspect of York.

I will be at the York Meet along with my buddies Rich and Stan from East Coast Enterprises. I will be making the 4 1/2 hour drive from CT very early Wednesday morning to help them set up the booth in the Orange Hall.  Will be staying at the Town Place Suites until Saturday. Have to use those Marriott points.

I like to think of myself as more of an enabler rather than a conscience. 

Seriously... You've mentioned some challenges getting around - get there a day early, maybe catch the end of the bandit meet if you can arrive before noon on Wednesday.  Get a good night's sleep to be ready for Thursday.  Staying Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday nights will allow you to move through the meet at your leisure, and not have to rush back home.  Also, IIRC if you sign up for Wyndham's loyalty program (free), there's an additional discount for stays of 3 or more nights.  I've found that the AARP discount usually gets the best rate.

BTW, the Wyndham Garden is an excellent choice - you can meet other train folks in the bar and at breakfast.  I'm waffling - I have reservations at both LQ and WG - WG is about $20 more per night.  Obviously going to cancel one of them.  We travel 550 miles each way, so we're staying Tuesday thru Friday nights.

Mallard, you have excellent points!  My only two times there,  I drove home after a Friday at York.  In the effort to save money, that is probably dumb in this case.  The trip takes me about 5 hours with stops included in that.  Why not reserve the extra night, and I can cancel one just as easily as I can cancel the whole trip if need be?

Enabler is a good term for your words.  In effect the discussion back and forth helps those involved make the best decisions whether it is building a layout or planning a trip to a show.

My grueling two hour drive is no problem on Thursday morning, I usually get going around 6:00AM so I can catch the breakfast at the Round-the-Clock diner.

I am glad to see the excitement building around the October York show this year. I know that many of you have been going for many years and you all have your chosen places.
For the last few years since we have been attending, my wife, daughter, and I have been staying in Intercourse, PA at a great Best Western. We usually attend the show on Friday, head to the hotel that evening, and then go back for a few hours on Saturday. We all enjoy the show, we get to visit the shops around Strasburg, and my daughter gets pool time at the hotel each night. It works for us, and the drive back and forth those couple days isn’t bad.

Sounds perfect as I love going first class!

The drinking part is why I always stay at the La Quinta (and the Best Western prior to it opening) - so I don't have to worry about driving after the Forum gathering Thursday night!  It's also why I never got to a Legacy Group Users meeting on Friday morning - the opening bell was early enough!
