Thanks Larry but that is the wrong motor. Part # 6SP2983205 was the original number which has been replaced by 6102062150. These both have worm gears. The worm drives two  other gears which  turn a square drive to raise or lower the pulley via the string. My question is what controls the stop of the string at the lowest and highest point to stop the current flowing to the motor preventing it from burning out?   

Sorry, the numbers you give are for the complete gearbox, and I did not see the motor on it. Not having a unit in front of me, and seeing that there are optical sensors and a micro switch in the parts list, I would say that the design, using electronic components, limits the travel of the mechanism. Look at the mechanism and see if you can find them.
