due to health reasons i have retired and am in the process of building my first layout. my first loop is down and i am running every engine i have to work out the bugs as i focus on other aspects of the layout. i have owned this 671 for more than 25 years, and its never had electricity applied to it in that length of time. it looks pristine, the body color is consistent, nothing broken, just an extremely fine example of this engine. so, i placed it on the track and applied power. it made some grinding noises (which i believe to be the worm gear slipping) so i took the motor out and it runs fine. i put it back in and tried again, with no luck. so i removed the connecting rods and put the chassis on the track. it took off so fast i thought it would fly off but luckily i caught it........... after all this background, my question is, why wont it run with the connecting rods on, and how do i fix it? thanks to anyone who takes the time to reply. grumps

The smoke cam on the front driver axle is frozen in place, or one or more of the wheels are out of quarter and binding the rods.
I would start with the smoke cam. The old SP pellets could really make a mess if overdone. The shell on a 671 comes off with one front screw and two rear screws. Its a good puller and a fun locomotive.
not the smoke cam lever...it works like a charm. i watched it closely as the chassis made its rounds. i'll check the alignment of the wheels. thanks
While checking the alignment also check to see if one, or more, wheels is lose on the axle. This would cause binding of the siderods.
If no success there. A bent shoulder bolt for a rod would do it too. Thread them back into the boss by fingers and feel for a warp. Try assembling one at a time and different combos, testing between each addition.
A rod boss on a wheel might not be drilled & tapped correctly as well.
good morning guys, and thanks for your interest and help with my problem. all replies made sense, but Adriatic was the closest to source of trouble i believe..... i put on one connecting rod and tried it, no luck. took it off and tried the other side, same result. so, i put it completely back together, put it on the track, applied power and gave it a hard push and off it went. maybe shuffling the shoulder screws around did the trick. i ran it for a minute or so, then took it off the track to oil it up, remember, this engine hasn't run in at least 25 years. it looks great and is running beautifully. i am a brand new member and this was my first post. its good to know that there are guys out there who are willing and able to help......i have stage 4 metastatic cancer and its so much fun to be building my first layout.........it is awesome and i hope to post some pictures in 3/4 weeks. thanks again guys, grumps
