This one's for Mark:
Summer 1957 at Ohiopyle, Pa. Dad was breaking in our brand new '57 Plymouth so a day trip. This Western Maryland Westbound obliged. All that is left is the bridge piers so the Great Allegheny Passage uses the highway bridge (in the background) to cross the river here.
The only WM on the Plywood Empire Route and I sold it because the livery is just so wrong:
A Picture a Day is now in Photo Albums so we can post real and model!

Lew - wonderful photo of the WM making the river crossing!! Love it!! Also very nice photo of your WM switcher with the passenger cars! I love how you turned up the juice to get the lights brighter. For some reason this photo evokes memories of Christmas' past ( circa 1950's ) when I was a kid viewing a dept. store train layout. Thanks for the memories! Too bad Lionel didn't get the livery right for the WM switcher. I guess the Lionel " powers that be ", at that time, thought the incorrect colors would sell better than the true black livery. Thanks for sharing both photos!
Deal, Pa on the Western Maryland, the summit on the Connellsville-Baltimore line:
To Dad's right is the foundation for a block signal. In the background just left of the right-of-way is the foundation for the station semaphore. Pic taken 1998 and this is finished rail-trail now.
The link below is to a pic (hosted by Rail Photo Art) of a coal train headed East through Deal. It shows the block signal , the station and it's semaphore (partially hidden behind a tree) and the water tank.

Dad started out as a Gandy Dancer but one day the Cook took sick and was never seen again. The Foreman asked my Dad (age 16) if he knew how to cook and Dad said Sure! The rest is history.
On the steps of his kitchen car. It had a small bedroom for the cook at one end as well as a pantry. The rest of the car was open with the coal-fired cookstove and a long table down the center of the car with benches on each side. All bolted down, of course and the cookstove had a railing around the edge to prevent pots&pans from sliding off.
