This is an HO layout but I think it is a nice story and a great layout...talk about being down under. I don't think I can ever complain about working in my basement ever again.
"HONGZ" stands for HO scale, N scale, G scale, and Z scale.
Post your non-O scale stuff here!

I admire what he has done.
The fact that he can still bend over once he gets down there is something.
I would have fallen over and taken the whole layout out numerous times.
More power to him.
Truly amazing. Absolutely gorgeous modeling, scenery and trains in crawl space.
Remarkable, what Jerry and Arnold said!
Spectacular.
Amazing craftsmanship.
Thank you for sharing, Paul! Excellent layout regardless of where it is located. I too am amazed he can still get in there and move around. I would have some trouble too.
That is a man with true dedication to his hobby!
It is amazing what he has accomplished and it really makes me think about what a solitary hobby this can be...
I remember seeing a similar story about an O gauge layout built in a crawl space that had been dug out under the guys house.... anybody else remember that??
Forum member, Roger Wasson, dug out under his house for his Solid Rock Railroad.
This is actually an “OO” scale layout, not HO scale. OO models are scaled to 4 mm = 1 foot (1:76) which is slightly larger than HO scale, which is 1/87 actual size.
This is the most popular scale in the UK, but is almost unheard of here.
I thought British folks only built things in sheds.
What a cool idea for utilizing what would otherwise be a wasted space. Good on him and awesome scenes.

I’m surprised the space was there. British houses don’t usually have cellars, apart from larger Victorian town houses. Foundations are usually solid.
Just thinking of how materials had to be transported through that tiny trap door makes me shudder.
Incredible' to say the least'.. a better man than me'... I could never accomplish that outstanding work in such a confined space'...
I have enough trouble in a full sized basement'... 👀
We dug out our crawlspace when we did a renovation over 10 years ago. Wife got a new kitchen, upstairs laundry / mud room, three renovated bathrooms, and 300 sq. ft. addition to our house, which became an expanded family room. I got an additional 300 sq. ft. of basement, plus a dug out crawl space between the existing sub-basement, and the new basement area.
View from the sub-basement looking south.
View from the sub.basement looking south, but east of the HVAC duct.
View from the new basement area, looking towards the spot where the other two photos were shot.
Benchwork as of 24-Jan-2010
View from about the same spot during my early Feb. operating session.
Regards,
Jerry
