Considering that $214 million dollars is the smallest fiscal year loss in Amtrak's 43 year history and that Amtrak and every other railroad in every other county has to keep fares low enough to make train travel affordable to compete with bus and car travel that loss is quite low. No railroad in the world turns a profit. If Amtrak would ask it's riders to pay for the full cost of providing dining car and sleeping car service so that Amtrak brakes even on these two services Amtrak just might come out even on it's bottom line.
