i know that our federal government takes a rather dim view of Amtrak but I do believe that they need to get serious about building the additional tunnels. Too much is riding on this to ignore it for long. If there had been an actual train wreck in those tubes, it might take weeks to clear and such a delay would curtail the whole economy of the whole country.
And speaking of rail passenger service, the rest of the country is also due for major improvements in service, equipment, investment and all. If you stop to realize that when Amtrak was formed some 50 years ago, the country's population was somewhere less than 300 million souls. Today it is over 330 million and growing fast. Our airlines simply will not be able to continue to expand to accommodate this continuing growth of people. We must broaden our transportation system to include a viable passenger rail service, in addition to airlines and other surface transportation systems.
An incident like this one is fair warning that we must invest in our rail system.
