Thank Congress for 50 years of starving Amtrak of proper funding.
As a fan of Amtrak, I'm very much hoping there is money in the infrastructure bill for rail. We really need it and with solid rail service we might cut down on clogged transportation systems elsewhere.

The NEC needs a tremendous amount of work - track geometry, signaling, station upgrades
The tunnels connecting Manhattan to the rest of the system will cost billions alone to fix. The list is long and the price tag high.
I punched tickets and drilled (moved) rolling stock, as a conductor, between Sunnyside Yard, Penn Station and Washington DC between 1974 and 1987. While conducting a passenger job I was hit in the head with a piece of falling concrete in Penn Station while writing down car numbers as the train entered the station from the yard.
