I ran across this item and found it somewhat amusing. The idea could have potential as a display layout if it was a helix with grades and just certain portions of track visible as on a mountainside.

Reminds me of how the old 8-track tapes worked with a continuous loop. Eventually the tapes tended to bind from the constant sliding friction.

Looks to me like a 'coaler' vortex!
There is also a video showing starts, stops, reversing and different speeds. HO scale, 9 locos and 228 cars.
Same guy has also made a double-spiral version.
It's a testimony to the performance and tracking reliability of model trains !
