I learned a lot about Pennsy and Belpaire boilers with one question (not what I

wanted to see...they rarely emigrated to other lines).  Now I wonder if there are any cabooses still being used in revenue service anywhere in the Hew Hess Hay, maybe on a branch as just a rider car, or as a transfer caboose in a yard, or...??? (not counting tourist roads,  where I have ridden in them and seen them)  I know that manpower costs led to their demise, but wonder if any other factors such as federal safety law changes had an impact, as I'm guessing it had with the disappearance of full ladders on freight cars.

Any idea when the last one ran, or is some road, Class 1 or industrial

captive still running them?

I have been to Alaska several time since 2004 and have seen several. I love Norfolk Southern but my heart will always be in Alaska, I have my own special railroad that has a place where the Norfolk Southern and Alaska meet.

Flash: There's a contrasting shot of the old and the new...caboose towed by two of the new "economy" multi-motored diesels.  From other comments above it looks like I guessed right that there would be a few cabooses trundling on, on shortlines and industrial railroads.

Like hunting down surviving railroad stations and other facilities, another camera

target to search for.

Why aren't you patriotic enough the type USA? We veterans don't appreciate crap like "Hew Hess Hay"!

Hot Water, I think it works this way. When you put on your uniform, you protected coloradohirailer's right to say whatever he wants.

          Just a reminder,

          Thanks for your service

And Hot Water has the same right to speak up as coloradohirailer.  Freedom to say your piece doesn't just extend to civilians (grateful or not).

Anyway...  back on topic...  I have seen a caboose being used in one of the Toledo (OH) yards just off I-75.  I can't remember the name of the yard but it is/was just east of the Ann Arbor RR yard.  I have also seen them on the Norfolk Southern tracks near Detroit Metro Airport.  I'm not sure how long it has been since my last sighting though.

Here in my town they regularly (daily?) use a BN caboose when collecting stray freight cars from the industrial spurs.  There's a couple of geeps with a caboose hooked to them sitting by the depot right now.

CSX in Rocky Mount, NC uses an old caboose on the local job depending on the length of the train being pushed.  Also I think they still use one on trains from Warsaw, NC to Clinton, NC; due to there being no run-around in Clinton they back the trains all the way from Warsaw (13-14 miles).
