Thinking of venturing out past my comfort zone of Lionel only. There is a piece of Atlas Big O 3 rail rolling stock that I would like to add to my collection. Are the couplers fully compatible or will I need to purchase and replace the trucks/couplers?

I think the only coupler compatibilty issue is with recently delivered Lionel couplers which are manufactured incorrectly. They don't even couple to other Lionel cars.
I have a mix of Lionel ,MTH, and Atlas, rolling stock and everything couples just fine.
Thanks Rick. I have been intentionally boycotting the newer Lionel but we’ll just leave that to the entirely separate thread.
Completely compatible, except the aforementioned new lionel junk.
Atlas has had issues of their own with zinc pest in coupler parts, but it’s certain runs of certain cars, from probably 15 years ago.
I can confirm Atlas, older Lionel, MTH, and Williams couplers are compatible (with some minor height differences). I don't have any "scale" couplers, but it looks like those may not be be compatible with the aforementioned traditional O Gauge couplers.

In fact, the Kadee #805 couplers will couple to most of the large "claw" couplers.

Cool. Thanks for posting that. Learned something new.
Indeed....one of the many great features of the Kadee coupler.
