Have a chance to buy this engine used with no box-#705. Anyone can tell me about this engine--good, bad or indifferent? I see MRL really does have this engine so that is a plus! Thanks, Don in Montana

I have two Atlas Western Maryland SD35s in 3 rail and for the time they are excellent locomotives. I think the detail is better than the MTH version.
If they were a little more era specific for my 2 rail modeling, I would have picked up some CNJ ones.
I think that engine was produced in the late 90s/early 2000s, possibly before Atlas started offering speed control (EOB)
Looks like it might be Atlas 6816 made in August 2001. The Engine # is 705 on the side. Anyone have a catalog to confirm that? Thanks, Don
Any idea on what this engine is worth- used? Anyone seen engine sold on bay or auction sites?
Great detail. Pulls great.
Downside no speed control, no smoke, poor headlamp lighting and 1 pickup roller per truck on the early runs.
No box kills the price, maybe $150-175 range on value

Here is the link to see it in the Atlas Archive. Atlas Archive O Scale Master Line SD35
Hope that helps!
Still working on buying this engine! All the information provided here shows it should be item #6816. The picture shows it as engine #701 however the engine I am looking at is #705. Did they make two different engine numbers for 6816? Any place I could buy a manual? This engine also has a smoke on/ off switch on the bottom! Thanks, Don
Item number 6816-1 is road number 701. Item number 6816-2 is road number 705.

Thanks for all the help- in price negotiation-- just wish it had orginial box! Don
Unique to Atlas, these SD35 models came with a set, (2), blind, (flange-less), center axles, which, when installed, allowed O54 operation.
